Thomas A. Downes, 85, of Scotrun, died peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 24, at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was the longtime companion of Mary Kay Carlin, at home.
He was born June 13, 1920, in Dublin, Ireland, the son of the late James P. and Margaret E. Egan Downes. He had been a resident of Monroe County for the past 16 years and prior to that of Blairstown, N.J. He moved to the United States in 1964 from Ireland.
Prior to his retirement in 1992 he was self-employed as a custom carpenter for his lifetime. Prior to moving to the United States, he was a carpenter building coach for his family business in Ireland.
In addition to his companion, he is survived by two sons, Sean A. Downes of Ireland and Kevin F. Downes of California; five daughters: Elaine M. Downes of Union, N.J.; Mary Pat Quinn of Stroudsburg; Beth Ward of Reeders; Peggy Gizara of Westampton, N.J.; and Leslie Drummond of Marlton, N.J.; 14 grandchildren: Liam, Akasha, Finn and Faye Downes; Joy and Zachary Migala; Jackie and Jimmy Gizara; Steven and Alex Peterson; and Heather, Mike, Jill and Danielle Drummond.
Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 27, at the Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home, 23 North Ninth St., Stroudsburg.
There will be viewings on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Cremation will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Blvd., Suite 1010, Rockville, MD 20852-9813.
