ALFRED E. MOHR
WHEELERSBURG-Alfred Eugene Mohr, 91, of Wheelersburg, passed away with family and friends near his side on Friday, May 6, 2016 at Parkside Senior Living in Westerville. He was born September 20, 1924 in Toledo, a son of the late Alfred and Olive Geiser Mohr. Alfred's beloved wife Alicejean (Barber) Mohr, predeceased him in 1991. Alfred was lucky in love, as he married again at age 72, to his lovely wife, Irene Mohr, who survives him and deeply grieves his loss.
Alfred supported his country, his community, and many individuals. Alfred served in the Army in World War II European Theater. Alfred attained the rank of Private First Class before he was severely injured and awarded the Military Order of the Purple Heart. In addition, he was awarded the American Defense Service Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal where he earned two Bronze Stars, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He remembered how difficult returning home from war is. He made it his mission to help other soldiers and their families. He actively supported, as a life member, the DAV Victory Chapter 134 and the VFW Chapter 2628. He was also involved actively in AMVETS, the Military Order of the Purple Heart Portsmouth Chapter 671 and the America Legion Minford Post #622. His community involvement included Kiwanis Club of Wheelersburg and the Girl Scouts of America . Alfred worked actively in the Girls Scouts throughout his life, first alongside Alicejean, who was an executive with the Girl Scouts of America, and then when he was needed. After his marriage to Irene, an Eastern Star member, he became a member of the Western Sun Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite. There is no membership list, but Alfred reached out to anyone he knew who needed help, an advocate, or advice, especially advice.
A member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, he retired from the J.M. Stuart Station of Dayton Power & Light, Aberdeen, Ohio where he worked as a cost accountant. His job at the former Williams Manufacturing Company brought him to the Scioto County area in 1974. Alfred attended First Community Church of Christ with Irene. A graduate of the former Libbey High School in Toledo, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business from the University of Toledo.
In addition to Edith Irene (Taylor) Mohr, Alfred is survived by three daughters, Marika "Mary Kay" Mohr of Grove City, Suzanne "Suellen" Kelly (Brian) of Westerville and Jane Anne (Paul) White of Wooster; six grandchildren, Bridget M. (Christopher Pitassy) Gutting, Brian C. White, Kevin P. White, Richard H. Parrish III, Frank A. Parrish and Calvin D. Parrish; four granddogs, Cat, Bear, Katie and Gyro; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.
He was also preceded in death by siblings Clifford Mohr, Olive Ewell, Daisy Irons and Beatrice Mohr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Adam Streitenberger officiating and interment in Greenlawn Cemetery. The Minford American Legion Post #622 will conduct military graveside rites.
The family will receive friends at the RALPH F. SCOTT FUNERAL HOME in Portsmouth Monday from 4 to 7 pm. A Masonic Service will be held at 7 pm Monday at the funeral home, followed immediately by a Wake Service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the DAV Victory Chapter #134, c/o Commander Ben Musik, 226 St. Rt. 239, West Portsmouth, OH 45663.
