Championship game. Score tied, bottom of the ninth two outs..... 3 balls and two strikes on the batter.
Sam always had a kind word for lower classmates, was admired and lettered in at least two sports. A tenacious competitor on the playing field.
Among other sporting skills, Sam was an accomplished base runner and led the Scioto County Fast Pitch Softball League in stolen bases.
On Summer evenings, league competition was enjoyed at the temporary softball diamond located at the Northeast corner of New Boston's Tiger Stadium. On these occasions, players and fans good-naturedly heckled each other and opposing teams players. Officiating was not above being cajoled, deservedly or not.
Arguably, Sam's most memorable steal was from third base to home plate. The most feared and winningest pitcher in the league, Deputy Sheriff Gene Sheers on the mound for the opposing team. Sam hit a ground ball between first and second and easily made first base. On the next pitch, Sam stole second and third on an error.
Regardless of what base Sam was on he always took a long lead off base. Sheers under estimated Sam's speed and guile and made the mistake of a pick off toss to the third baseman. Sam was halfway between home and third and took off like a rocket torpedoing into home plate for the winning run.
When the dust settled the disheveled hapless catcher was seated several feet from home plate.
A hush fell over the boisterous gathering........Sam looked up at the umpire who appeared undecided until he saw the loose ball lying next to the catchers mitt.....the rest is history.
Deputy Sheriff Sheers walked over to the third base line, picked up Sam's ball cap and delivered it to our hero as if to validate Sam's heroics.
After the game and many years hence, Sam maintained he beat the throw from third base but collided with the catcher as he torpedoed past home plate.
I always believed Sam, no matter what he said.
Sam was a good man. He was born to good people. Like our own mothers and fathers who passed on to Sam those good qualities. Sam and his classmates were kind enough to pass those same legacy qualities to us.
May he rest in peace.
