Dolores Read Obituary

DOLORES C. READ Age 75 of Chesterton, Indiana, passed away on Monday, September 1, 2003 at her residence. She was a retired teacher employed with the Indianapolis School Systems. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a former President of the Chesterton Womens Club, Leader of Indiana State Award Winning Project for Chesterton Women's Club, she was the Original Swim Coach for the Golden Gators of Chesterton High School. She was a member of the Delta Theta Tau Sorority, Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, she was a Board Member of the Duneland YMCA, a member the United Methodist Women's Club. Dolores was a volunteer for the Northern Amateur Tournament held at the Sand Creek Country Club, the Boy Scouts of America Den Mother and she was a former volunteer for the United Way. She was born in Hammond, IN on March 20, 1928 to the late Harry Cawley and Mae Lowery. She was married on June 25, 1951 in Chesterton, IN to Dr. John E. Read, who survives, of Chesterton, IN. Also surviving are 1 son, William (Mary) Read of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; daughters, Lisa (Paul) Schiro of Houston, TX, Mary Beth (Alvin II) Slont of Chesterton, IN, and Carol (Bill) Ameling of Shorewood, MN; brothers, H. William (Rosalie) Cawley of Scottsdale, AZ; 11 grandchildren, Morgan Read, John A., Mary Beth, Stewart and Emily Rose Miglicco, Erin, Jessica and Alvin III Slont, Read, Dane and Rachael Ameling. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 5, 2003 at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 434 S. 2nd Street, Chesterton, IN. Rev.Terry Rhine officiating. Entombment in the Chesterton Cemetery, Chesterton, IN. The visitation will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2003 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN 46304. Family suggests memorials to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network National Network Headquarters, 2221 Rosencrans Avenue, Suite 131, Ed Segundo, CA 90245.

I learned to play bridge with Delores and John and have missed her wit and wisdom. We also shared a love of Drathaars. I am sorry others won't be touched by her laughter and kindness and although I didn't see her lately, I will miss her.
