James D. Mefford, age 83, of Owens Crossroads, Alabama, passed away on August 27, 2009 in Huntsville, Alabama. He was born in Big Cove, Alabama on August 3, 1926, the son of Jake and Dolly Mefford, and is preceded in death by his parents and several brothers and sisters. He is survived by Nettie Ruth (Clark) Mefford of Avondale, Arizona; Sons: David (Vanessa) Mefford of Lake Station, Indiana: Michael (Valerie) Mefford of Valparaiso, Indiana: Daughter Jamie (Ray) Cain of Avondale, Arizona; Grandchildren: Chris Mefford, Kerry Mefford, Louie (Marilee) Mefford, Jake (Hope) Mefford and Alex (Chrissy) Mefford all of Indiana: Kim Briggs and Niki (Jeff) Dickinson of Arizona; Great-grandchildren: Clayton Mefford, Bradley Mefford and Alyssa Mefford of Indiana: Mason Ramsay, Morgan Briggs, Jeffrey Dickinson and Andrew Dickinson of Arizona; Sister Jewel Chandler of Toney, Alabama and numerous nieces and nephews. He served in the United States Navy at Okinawa during World War II, and was awarded the Purple Heart, the Victory, and Asiatic-Pacific Medals. After serving his country he returned home and graduated from Joe Bradley High School in Huntsville, Alabama. He retired from Inland Steel Company in Indiana with 27 years of service. He owned and operated Mefford Electric Company and was the electrical inspector for the city of Lake Station, Indiana. He also owned and operated a school bus for the Hobart Township School Corporation. Mr. Mefford was a member of the American Legion Post 260 in Portage, Indiana. He managed and coached Little League and Babe Ruth League baseball. He was an avid woodworker who enjoyed making furniture. He will be missed by family and friends. A private burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Portage, Indiana. Burns Funeral Home, 701 E. 7th Street, Hobart, IN in charge of local arrangements.
