Peggy Terzes Obituary

Peggy Terzes (nee Kougoufas), age 91, of Chesterton, IN, passed away on January 12, 2017, just 41 days after the passing of her devoted husband and caregiver of 71 years, Albert George Terzes. She was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Peggy was married to Albert in the Greek Orthodox Church after Albert's return from WWII. During WWII, she was one of many "Rosie the Riveters," engraving her initials on several of the gun shells while hoping Albert might find just one aboard his aircraft carrier. While Al was in the Navy, Peggy wrote letters to Al from herself and from her immigrant parents. Peggy is survived by her daughters: Marianne (Ken) Dowdy, Georgene Johnson and Valerie (John) Tanke; grandchildren: Kristen (Anthony) Waterbury, Sarah (Jeff) Jura, Maren Johnson, Joseph Johnson, Matthew Tanke and Michael Tanke; one great-granddaughter, Mariska Waterbury; sister, Besse (late Bill) Naglosky; one brother, Tom (late Frieda) Kayes, and sister-in-law, Joan Kayes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert; parents: Kosmas and Anna (Dres) Kougoufas; and brother, Kosmas Kayes. Peggy was a member of Ss. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Merrillville, IN, and St. Iakovos Greek Orthodox Church, Valparaiso, IN. Peg had a close group of high school girlfriends, (10 Greek girls), that remained friends for decades called Club Deka. While raising three girls with Al, Peg worked part-time at J.C. Penny at the Village. She and Al took great pride in seeing all three daughters and all six grandchildren receive college degrees. When the girls were young, she was president of her daughters' elementary school PTA, a Girl Scout leader, a member of the Philoptochos Ladies Society, and a member of the Eastern Star. She took great pride in babysitting and spending time with her grandchildren. Friends may visit with the family on Monday, January 16, 2017, at Geisen Funeral and Cremation Services, 7905 Broadway, Merrillville, IN 46410, from 3:00 to 7:00 PM, with a Trisagion Service at 5:00 PM. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at Ss. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 8000 Madison St., Merrillville, IN, at 10:00 AM, with Fr. George Pappas and Fr. Jim Greanias officiating. Interment will take place at Ridgelawn Cemetery in Gary, IN. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Dunes Hospice, 4711 Evans Ave, Valparaiso, IN 46383.
