Robert Springsteen Obituary

ROBERT BURNS SPRINGSTEEN II Valparaiso, IN Robert Burns Springsteen II, 90 of Valparaiso, died Monday, January 5, 2009 at his home. He was born June 1, 1918 in Harvard, Illinois, the son of Robert B. and Margaret E. (Nothnagel) Springsteen. On December 27, 1941, in Baltimore, he married Anna K. Zink who preceded him in death in 1985. A daughter, Margaret, preceded him in death in 1974. In 1986 he married Marlise (Zink) Reidenbach who survives. Also surviving are a son Robert B. III of Cloverdale, IN, a daughter Janet D. (Dane Konop) Springsteen of Shepherdstown, WV, a son John P. (Becky) of Valparaiso, a step daughter Marlise Anne Reidenbach of Valparaiso and five grandchildren, Robert B. Springsteen IV, Danielle Gingrich, Peter Springsteen, Melissa Springsteen and Diane C. Konop and a great grandchild Griffin Jelenski. He was retired from Valparaiso University where he graduated in 1940 and served from 1946 to 1950 and again from 1956 to 1987 as Business Manager. In addition to his work at the University he was active in church and civic affairs at Faith Memorial Lutheran Church, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Valparaiso Lutheran Builders Association, Christian Community Action and the Porter County Arts Commission. He served as president of the Indiana Chapter of the National Association of College and University Business Officers, the Indiana Group of College and University Purchasing Agents and for a number of years was Treasurer of the Lutheran Human Relations Association of America and Laudate, Inc. In WW II he was a Captain, Finance Department, in charge of Special Funds for the Office of Strategic Services in Paris - disbursing funds for all the secret intelligence operations on the European continent. He was the recipient of 3 battle stars and commendations from Gen. W.J. Donovan and Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower. In 1950, during the Korean conflict, he was called back to The Central Intelligence Agency serving from 1950 to 1956 as a finance and administrative officer. He is also well known in the area for his fiber works which are held in many private collections, at Faith Memorial Lutheran Church and several Valparaiso University buildings. A memorial service will be held at Faith Memorial Lutheran Church, 753 N. Calumet Avenue, Valparaiso, Saturday, January 10, 2009 at 1:00 PM Rev. John Albers officiating. Visitation will be Saturday, 11:00 AM until time of services. Memorial Donations may be made to Valparaiso University. Bartholomew Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
