Dolores Schaefer Obituary
Appleton, 87, died Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at home with her husband at her side. She was born on Sept 14, 1927, the daughter of the late William and Hattie (Arts) Kempen. Dolores grew up on a poultry farm. She attended St. Francis School in Holland Town and Kaukauna High School; graduating in 1945 to work at Kaukauna Club Cheese Co. On Sep 12, 1949 she wed Jerry Schaefer; settled on the Schaefer homestead; and canned, sewed and mothered 6 babies in 7 years. In 1965 earned an associate's degree from FVTC, worked for State Farm Ins., Appleton Structural Steel, and I. Bachall. Her talents included crocheting, knitting, sewing, Sudoku, and decorating cakes. She was very active in the Healing Ministry: member of St. Bernard's Parish; Cross and Crown Prayer Group and Intercessors of Light Prayer Group. Family and friends appreciated her creativity; and her diligence to work quietly behind the scenes. She was called the 'Birthday Cake Grandma!' Her love is not easy to put into words—she was loyal, trustworthy and our dear sweet Mother.
She'll be sorely missed by her husband of 65 years, Gerald R. Schaefer; her children: Don (Shirley) Schaefer, Town of Grand Chute; Karen (Roger) Roth, Appleton; Patricia (Dave) Kane, Neenah; Judy (Paul) Brueggemann, St Paul, MN; Dave (Betty) Schaefer, Grand Chute; Nancy McDaniel and special friend, Dan Coots, Appleton; her sister-in-law Germaine Kempen, Hollandtown; nineteen grandchildren: Lisa (Dave) Gaupp, Greenville; Jason (Jenna) Schaefer, Appleton; Joe (Jenny) Roth, Appleton; Roger (Rebecca) Roth Jr., Grand Chute; Ryan (Amanda) Roth, Appleton; Kevin (Molly) Roth, Neenah, Jenni (Jude) Miron, Apple Valley, MN; Wendy (Dave) Mader, Neenah; Matthew (Krystal) Kane, Apple Valley, MN; Beau (Erin) Brueggemann, St. Paul, MN; Amy (George) Petruck, St. Paul, MN; Sara (Sean) Gokey, St. Paul MN; Mary Brueggemann, Des Moines, IA; Nick Brueggemann, Fargo, ND; Sarah Schaefer, Hortonville; Doug (Genifer) Schaefer, Greenville; Hope Schaefer, Oshkosh; Brianna McDaniel, Appleton and Sam McDaniel, Appleton; 26 great-grandchildren and many close friends.
Dolores was preceded in death by her parents and brothers: Merlin Kempen; Russell Kempen; and sisters: Arvila Vande Hey; Evelyn Van Lanen; Cordell Hurst.
A Mass of Resurrection for Dolores will be held at 11 AM, Sat. May 23, 2015 at St. Bernard Catholic Church (1617 W Pine St.) Appleton, with Rev. Dennis Ryan officiating. Entombment will be held in Highland Memorial Park, Appleton. Friends may visit the family Sat. directly at church from 9 - 11 AM. A memorial fund is being established.

Sending my thoughts and prayers to the Schaefer family at this time of loss. I will remember her as the Godly gracious woman she was. She would make awesome potato salad and yes I remember the creative cute cakes for the grand children.
