Randy DeDecker Obituary

Randy DeDecker

Hortonville - Randy Joseph DeDecker, D.V.M., was born December 18, 1952, to Harold and Gertrude DeDecker in Appleton, WI, the youngest of four siblings. He married his high school sweetheart, Nancy, on June 15, 1973. His daughter, Laura, was born in 1983 and his son, James, in 1985. He graduated from UW-Oshkosh with a Bachelor's degree in Biology and Chemistry. In 1988, he graduated from UW-Madison, earning a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. After graduation, he practiced in communities across Wisconsin until 2003 when he purchased Country View Animal Hospital (CVAH) in Neenah, WI.

Randy fought a life-long battle with Crohn's disease and, in his final years, multiple related health problems. Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in October 2020, Randy passed away peacefully on January 25 at home surrounded by family.

Randy loved nature, gardening and the outdoors; stars, birds and flowers all enthralled him. One of his favorite activities each year was the Sandhill crane count, which he and his family have participated in since 1983. Randy was also a train enthusiast, colleting Lionel model trains since childhood. He cared for, and was generous toward, those around him. Randy cherished the time he spent with his three grandchildren: Ana (11), Adah (10) and George (4 mo.). He also cared deeply about the employees and clients of CVAH and their non-human family members.

Randy is survived by his devoted wife, Nancy; his two children, Laura (Jeremy) Malzon and James (Lucy) DeDecker; his three sisters, Rose (Tom-deceased) Ahrens, Kathy (Bill-deceased) Gardner, and Terry Schmidt; many nieces and nephews; his mother-in-law Margery Balliette; and his three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both of his parents. A celebration of Randy's life will be held at Kessler Funeral Home in Neenah, WI on Friday, January 29, 5-7pm. Memorials may be made in his honor to Northeast Wisconsin Land Trust or Wisconsin Public Broadcasting.

Dr Randy while building his new facility helped us with a difficult decision with our Taz. Dr didn't have his computers set up, but did have an exam table! He was a wonderful person whom always helped us. Condolences to your family.

Dr. DeDecker was so kind to us at a time when our family was hurting, and had gotten a puppy to help ease the pain. Randy was a generous and compassionate human being who will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and sympathy are extended to his family.

So sad to hear of Randy’s death. Whenever I ran into someone who knew him, they inevitably had glowing things to say about both him as a human being , and his work as a Veterinarian.

Our prayers are with the family tonight.

Doc. D. was the most generous Veterinarian I have ever known. I have many memories of him going out of his way not just for our pets, but for any animal. Several years ago we found a kitten on the side of the highway in New London. Something wasn’t right with him, so we called Doc. D. It was late and there was a snow storm. He did not hesitate to meet us at the clinic. He ran as many tests as he could being so late. He did everything he could for that kitten. We had so much gratitude and still do. That is just one example of the many acts of kindness we have witnessed. We have so many memories of him being such a amazing Vet and a kind and generous human being. He will be missed and thought of often!

Sad to hear the news. You will be deeply missed by many! I don’t know of anyone else that I would trust to care for my pets the way you did. I will always remember you as most generous and kind. I very much enjoyed chatting about animals or visiting your clinic. Growing up I believed I would be a veterinarian one day like you. Unfortunately, after one job shadow I realized I couldn’t handle the surgeries haha. Rest easy and God Bless you. Sending my condolences to the rest of the family.

Randy was a very kind vet and was always good to all our pets . I remember him telling me once "if you find that a person that is kind to animals, well there's a sign that they will be kind to you as well!" He will be missed.
