Robert Knuth Obituary

Knuth, Robert R.

EAST GREENBUSH Robert R. Knuth, age 83, passed away August 29, 2013, peacefully at home after a long illness with his loving family at this side. Bob was born and raised in Milwaukee, WI, the son of Ralph and Edna (Babcock) Knuth. He attended Marquette University School of Dentistry, until he joined the Air Force during the Korean War. He later graduated from Milwaukee School of Engineering with a Mechanical Engineering degree. His first job was at The Falk Corp. in Milwaukee, as a Machine Shop Engineer. He then joined Appleton Wire Works, Appleton, WI in 1966 as Plant Engineer. In 1976 he relocated to Albany International as Director of Engineering. He retired in 1984 and spent the next ten years working for the NYS Office of General Services as a Purchase Specification Assistant. During his retirement years, he enjoyed his volunteer job at Albany Memorial Hospital Diabetes Clinic. He spent many hours gathering information and writing articles as Editor of the newsletter "Diabetes Pipeline," which was his special project.

Bob enjoyed hunting and fishing, feeding his backyard birds and traveling, but his biggest joy was spending time with his family. His beloved wife of 57 years, Mary (Nelson) Knuth, his loving daughters, Sueann (Rusty) Senecal and Heidi (Tom) DeBerry will miss him greatly, as will his grandchildren: Christopher, Lindsey and Michael, step- grandson, Ryan and great- granddaughter, Amanda, all of whom he cherished deeply. He is also survived by his sister Janet Ivins of Tavares, FL, brother-in-law, Robert Nelson of Easton, MD and nieces Donna and Bethany, both of Florida.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Wednesday Sept 4, 2013 11:00 am from the Greenbush Reformed Church Hayes Rd and Columbia Tpk. Calling hours will be Tuesday evening from 4-7 in the Rockefeller funeral Home 165 Columbia tpk. Rensselaer.

The family would like to thank Dr. Ara Kayayan, Dr. Leslie Goldstein, Dr. Richard Ginsburg and Dr. Robert Sax for treating Bob with their care and expertise thru the many years of his struggle to overcome the many complications of diabetes. The family would also like to give a special thank you to Dr. Arif at Albany Memorial Hospital for his compassion and understanding, also to Bob's Hospice team, especially Elizabeth, who went above and beyond.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation to the Greenbush Reformed Church, 688 Columbia Tpk., East Greenbush, NY 12061 or the Albany Memorial Hospital Diabetes Center 600 Northern Blvd Albany, 12204 NY in Bob's memory.

I want to say I still have a vivid recollection of my interaction with Robert at OGS. For me that is an unusual situation. I think of Bob every time I look at the finger tip markings from pricking my finger tips to get a blood sample for a glucose meter reading. Bob and I would compare our scaring and Bob being a far more conscientious tester would always have a more impressive pattern of test marks. I specifically remember our conversations and his advice as I try to improve my target shooting. I remember him every time I allow my daily routine on glucose control to be altered and the after effects of those changes. I don't want to bore you with my experiences. I just want Bob's children and grandchildren to know that besides his many professional accomplishments he had lasting and positive effect one and people like me.

I hope he is looking down on all of us and I hope he is enjoying some of the very positive developments that have occurred in the field of diabetes. I'm sure like it was for many others it was a pleasure to know him and learn from him.

I had the pleasure of working with Robert at O.G.S. I relied on his advice on both work issues and his encouragement in battling diabetes. I offer my sincere sympathy to all who will miss his presence in their lives.
