William Neabling Obituary

Neabling, William James "Bill"

Bill Neabling, a lifelong resident of Neenah, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 27th with his family by his side at Valley VNA in Neenah. He was born October 1, 1915 at the home of his parents, the late William and Jensena (Christensen) Neabling. In high school he participated in track, football, and basketball. He was a starter on the Neenah Rockets basketball team in his sophomore year and team captain during his senior year when the Rockets competed in the 1932 state championship game. At the end of his senior year he joined the National Guard and served three years with Company I, rifle division. He was an avid hockey player and played several seasons with the semi-pro Neenah Red Wings.

In 1934 Bill began working for Kimberly-Clark Corporation. In 1978 he retired from Lakeview Mill after 44 years of service.

Bill met Joan Vander Heyden while ice skating at Green Park and on May 31st, 1941 they were married at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Appleton. Joan preceded him in death on Oct. 31, 1985, after 44 years of marriage.

Bill loved his retirement years. He was an avid year-round fisherman and hunter. His last buck was shot with a crossbow when he was 90 years old. Bill was also a fan of the Bucks, Brewers and a season ticket holder for the Packers, but he especially enjoyed watching many years of his granddaughters' softball games.

Bill was a faithful member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church where he ushered the 7:30 A.M. mass on Sundays for 24 years. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters: Mildred Neabling and Grace Nelson; and his brothers: Maurice and Howard Larson. Bill will be remembered with love and affection by his three children: Sue Losse (special friend Harvey Walbrun) of Menasha; Deb Kordsmeier (Kent) of Neenah; Tim (Jana) of Neenah. He will be sadly missed by his three granddaughters whom he lovingly called "my girls": Beth Neabling of Neenah; Michelle Neabling of Glendale, Arizona; and Stephanie Neabling (fiancé Taylor Morris) of Neenah. He is also survived by two grandsons: Mike Losse of San Diego, California and Patrick Losse of Oshkosh; and six great-grandchildren: Michael and Alexis Losse; John, Rob, Nick Losse; and Brayden Neabling. He is further survived by his nephew Howard (Marion) Larson.

The Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Margaret Mary Church, 620 Division Street, Neenah, with Fr. Michael Ingold officiating. Family and friends will be received at the church from 9:30 A.M. until the hour of service. Internment will be at St. Margaret Cemetery.

When I was growing up, we lived next door to the Neabling's. As a matter of fact, my mother still lives there. I would look out our kitchen window to see how large the deer or sturgeon was that Bill would have hanging in his garage. My sympathy goes out to Sue, Deb and Tim.

Bill was a great guy, already ready to hear or share a hunting or fishing story. I was his son in-law since 1994. His favorite time of year was winter, whether it was for deer hunting or ice fishing. He would ice fish every day if his schedule allowed it. And then ask Deb and I over for a perch dinner. Great guy, he will be missed by those who loved him.
