Benjamin Reo Darrington, 26, of Seattle, Wash., passed away Monday, Jan. 10, 2011, at AMC Hospital in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Benjamin was born on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 22, 1984, in Powell, Wyo.
He attended grade school and middle school in Helena, Mont. He attended prep school in Concord, N.H., graduating magna cum laude and winning the Greek Prize at St. Paul's School in 2003. At St. Paul's, Ben participated in chamber orchestra and football. Ben also studied school a year abroad, spending a prep academic year in China.
Between his prep school and college years, Ben spent a gap year in China. Ben traveled extensively in-country and experienced a wealth of adventure and Chinese culture. During that year, Ben hosted several guest travelers, including his sister, Carrie. He covered his travel expenses as an entertainer in a karaoke game show lounge, as an extra in movies, as a bouncer in a bar and by playing online poker.
Ben attended Yale University and graduated with the class of 2008 with a degree in political science and Chinese. While at Yale, he was active in libertarian politics and served as an officer of the Party of the Right. Ben was a participant in Yale's inaugural year of student exchange with Peking University in Beijing, China. Ben also studied in Austria during his college years.
Ben was an avid traveler and linguist. He was competent in spoken Mandarin, Cantonese and Spanish.
He often guided others in discovering rough travel in foreign lands. All told, Ben traveled to 29 foreign countries.
Ben was a dedicated amateur student, specializing in political, social and economic theory. In his self-tuition, he garnered the von Mises Award for Austrian Economics. He read in Greek and Latin. Benjamin also taught himself ancient Icelandic in order to better study Icelandic political history.
Benjamin was employed at Ballard Organics.
Ben is survived by his parents, Brad and Val Carson Darrington of Shelley; his brothers, Matthew (Carol) Darrington of Charleston, S.C., and Bradley Darrington of Orem, Utah; his sister, Carrie Darrington of South Hadley, Mass.; his grandparents, Betty Carson of Shelley and John and Jolene Darrington of Quartzsite, Ariz.; and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

I've never met Ben in person, I have only met Ben through his online posts and from those close to him. He was truly an inspiring individual who will be missed by his many friends, those who had the pleasure of his company during his lifetime and especially his family. Yet, somehow, I can feel his presence looking down on us all smiling peacefully, reassuring us all that things will be okay. My deepest sympathy, to his family.

I just heard about Ben. He and I were good friends from the sixth to ninth grade; I still remember the slide didgeridoo he invented. When he left for St. Paul’s, we all knew he was destined for great things; now, I deeply regret not keeping in touch. I had somehow taken it for granted that our paths would cross again -- it seemed inevitable someone like Ben would become a mover and shaker in the world, easy to track down by his wake of brilliance. He was one of the people most worthy of emulation I have ever known. The world is a less exciting place without him.

I had the pleasure of teaching Ben Social Studies in the seventh grade at Helena Middle School. Ben was one of the most impressive students I ever had the pleasure of working with during my 34 years of teaching. I can still picture his excitement and enthusiam with learning. Several memories that immeidately come to mind are 1) the aboriginal music instrument he brought to class and shared with all, and 2) the excitement he displayed when I gave him a hughe poster sized crossword puzzle of history items. Reading his accomplishments over such a short period of time did not surprize me. Anyone that knew Ben knew he was going to make a mark on society. May the memories of the many great times help family and friends deal with this lose.

To the Darrington Family -
Ben was an amazing person, an influential thinker, and a good friend. We had many chats, laughs, good beer, and great times while I lived in Seattle and hung out with him. He was always full of great advice that I will always remember and appreciate. Ben never turned down an invite to spend time talking about life's oddities. I also remember when he came to my birthday party and met my friends from work and we watched Discovery Channel's Planet Earth until 4 in the morning.
Great people are rare, and I was blessed to have met one such person.
