Mark Shelby Obituary

Mark Leon Shelby, 53, passed away Sept. 16, 2010, at his home in Spokane, Wash., with his wife, Jan, by his side.

Mark was born Dec. 29, 1956, in Twin Falls, Idaho. He graduated from Glenns Ferry High School, Class of 1975. He then attended and graduated from Brigham Young University, Class of 1980, receiving a degree in accounting. Mark served an honorable full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Rio de Janeiro North from 1976 to1978.

Mark was sealed to Jan E. Rumsey on Dec. 27, 1979, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple for time and all eternity. He resided in Burley, Idaho; Glenns Ferry, Idaho; Provo, Utah; Twin Falls; Idaho Falls; and Spokane. Each place he lived, Mark made lasting friendships. He was full of life and his career was always exciting for him. He began employment with Stan Snow CPA in Twin Falls, and throughout the rest of his life he was a successful self-employed businessman and entrepreneur. Mark's accounting practice was full of friends and loved ones whom he cared for deeply.

Mark was always up for anything, including camping trips with family, being a cowboy, boating, waterskiing, snow skiing, and golfing. He enjoyed getting together with loved ones, always making every effort to attend gatherings with family and friends. Mark loved his wife and boys, daughters-in-law and his grandchildren. Being a grandfather was such a joy to Mark. His grandchildren were constantly at the center of his thoughts and life, and he made sure to share that love with them and all those around. He valued family traditions big and small, from Schweitzer ski trips to Wolf Lodge dinners.

He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as Scout master, Young Men's president, ward clerk, home teacher and in the branch presidency of the Prison Outreach Program. He was also involved in the community from student body president of Glenns Ferry High School and, most recently, president of the BYU Alumni Association in Spokane. Mark loved serving the youths in Boy Scouts of America and coaching sports.

Mark was survived by his wife, Jan Shelby; and their three sons, Kreg (Kiersten), Matthew (Courtney) and Ryan, all of Spokane; father, Dale L. Shelby of Twin Falls; his sisters, Dian of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Sue Ann (James) Stanger of Helena Mont.; brother, Joseph D. (Amber) Shelby of Highland, Utah; and grandchildren, Kalle, Tysen and Dylan.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty L. Shelby; sister, Darla K. Hall; and grandparents, Joseph and Alice Shelby.

Visitation will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today, Sept. 21, at Heritage Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 1620 E. 29th Ave.

Following the services, there will be a procession to Greenwood Cemetery.

What a burden it seems, when in passing
to lose a loved-one close and dear
Time will pass and hurt will ease
but the memories will vividly be clear

When in times of mourning
it's easy to forget
the gospel of our Savior
and that we will see him again

Though in times of sadness
we miss our brother dear
God will be with us
to see us trough the year. (Psalms: 23), ("Footprints in the sand")

Though our testimony will be put on trial
we will not ever waiver
not even when temptation comes
before we see the Savior
(Kyle B. Parish)

Dear Families' Shelby

My deepest sympathies go to you. I was only about 5 years old when you moved to King Hill so I didn't get to know you on a personal basis, except at family reunions and weddings etc... But something that has really stood out to me, and that I have thought about from time to time is what a genuine, sweet, nice family Aunt Betty and Uncle Dale raised. I cannot remember any of your family saying an unkind word, and I will always remember Aunt Betty saying "Always be your bestest self" at the family reunions'. Mark was certainly a perfect example of that. When I think of myself becoming a better person I always think of your family as an example.

I personally believe this is a wonderful time in Marks existence even though he is deeply missed. He is now reunited with the Savior and Aunt Betty and he doesn't have endure the trials of Earth anymore.

My prayers are with you

Dearest Jan and the Shelby family,

Mark was such a fun and kind person, I will always remember the Easter picnics up Birch Creek when Aunt Betty would get a game of softball going and she could hit it a mile. We would get together for one of the Aunt's birthdays and make homemade ice cream. There was always a B Ball game with the uncles vs the cousins. When Steve would come to town we would load up the horses and go for the hills, or grab the guns and go rabbit hunting. Mark was always upbeat and enjoyed life and way a joy to be around. He always made you feel like you were the most important person when you were around him. He will truly be missed.
You're in our prayers, and may the Lord comfort you at this time.

I am so sorry to hear of Mark's untimely death. I have such wonderful memories of the times we spent playing together when he and his family lived next to us in Burley. No matter how many years passed, and no matter how many miles there were between us, Mark was always a true friend, genuinely interested in whatever happened to be going on with me at whatever time we saw one another. The world is truly a better place for his presence in it. I wish your family peace and comfort during this sad, sad time. Paz seja convosco! Tchau, meu amigo de fe, meu irmao, camerada!

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. All you said in Mark's obituary lets me know that I missed something by not knowing Mark later in life -- I graduated with Mark in Glenns Ferry and last saw him our freshman year at BYU. It's no surprise at all that Mark continued to be the go-getter and friendly guy he was during high school. It's wonderful to hear he gave such great service in community and church, and again, not a surprise. Mark's family and close friends have someone to admire and look up to, and that will not change with Mark now on the other side. He left a lasting legacy. Again, I'm sorry to hear that you lost Mark and so early in his life.

September 19, 2010

Jan and family, We are so sorry to hear of Marks passing. I am so glad to have had the opportunity to see Mark this August. I had not seen him in years and it meant alot to me that he would come by to say hi. He always had a great smile. We grew up together in Burley until his family moved to King Hill. He lived across the street from me while we were growing up and being the "cowboys" of the neighborhood. We were always the best of buds. We send our love and prayers to you during this time of sorrow. Ken and Becki Harper
