John J. Case
Dec. 27, 1947 - Jan. 15, 2024
LAKE GEORGE - John J. Case, 76, of Lake George, NY - It is with a heavy heart we share that beloved husband, uncle, brother and friend, John Case, passed away on Monday, January 15, 2024 at Glens Falls Hospital. A great booming laugh, large stature and the biggest heart, John's kindness will be missed and always remembered.
Born December 27, 1947 in Salem, OH, John was the oldest son of Sally Yahn Case and Joseph Case. The oldest of four brothers, John graduated from Hubbard High School in 1966 with varsity letters in basketball and football. He attended Kent State University and was a Phi Gamma Delta brother.
John was a talented athlete and lifelong sports fan. Wearing number "00", he was a force to be reckoned with as a linebacker for the Glens Falls Greenjackets from 1976-1983. He was inducted in the Greenjackets Hall of Fame, Class of 1998. John always stayed loyal to his Ohio teams, enjoyed wearing their colors and cheering them on. He had the quiet confidence of an athlete and started each day with a morning workout.
John's love for Lake George began on a summer trip with his fraternity brothers. He found his first job at the Montcalm North Restaurant, then bartended summers at the best of Lake George nightlife; Apple Annies, The Garrison, East Cove, Lake Theater, Barleycorns and Wades. Winters he was southbound to the beach to bartend at The Elbo Room in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
John met the love of his life, Terri, April 11, 1985. From then on, he braved the snow to stay in Lake George Village year-round and build their life together. John and Terri became the proprietors of The Lemon Peel Lounge on Canada Street, then later Dieskau Street in the Village. "The Peel" was open 365 days a year and John's kind and calm demeanor created a welcoming vibe appreciated by locals. For 25 years, John enjoyed the night shift behind the bar, the excitement of Sunday football and most of all the camaraderie of patrons who became friends. His professionalism was recognized by former Mayor Bob Blais who commended John for 25 years of service to the Village and that he and Terri were "good folks making a living in a challenging industry".
An avid reader and history buff, not a day went by when John did not have a book or magazine in his hands. His favorite place to read was on a beach or in his own backyard, appreciating the beauty of Lake George in the summer or escaping the cold to the Caribbean, where he and Terri vacationed.
John will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 36 years, Theresa "Terri" Case of Lake George, NY; and their rescue dog, Sassy. John is survived by his brother, Tom (Georgia) Case of Canfield, OH; and his nieces and nephews: Ashley Case (Steve) Sletvold, Maggie (George) Shackelford, Ryan (Melissa) Case and their families; his sister-in-law, Mary (Terry) Butler, North Greenbush, NY; and his nieces and nephews: Ryan Butler, Kelly (Peter) Mullen and Erin (Corey) Reynolds and their families; and his niece, Allison Wilshere (Jeff Gargano), Argyle, NY and their dogs and horses. John was predeceased by his brothers: Robert and Richard, and by his parents.
We are thankful for the care John received by the kind staff of Memorial Sloane Kettering and Glens Falls Hospital.
A gathering is planned for spring for family and friends to celebrate of John's life.
