John Sprott Obituary

John "Herb" Sprott

April 18, 1941 - March 2, 2026

GLENS FALLS - John "Herb" Sprott, 84, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, March 2, 2026, at Glens Falls Hospital.

Born on April 18, 1941, in Glens Falls, he was the son of the late John Sr. and Irene (Healy) Sprott.

A lifelong resident of Glens Falls, Herb graduated from Glens Falls High School in 1959. He proudly served his country as a medic in the United States Army from 1965 to 1969. Following his military service, he dedicated his career to the United States Postal Service, beginning as a letter carrier and eventually rising to become Postmaster of the Whitehall, New York Post Office. He believed in showing up every day with integrity, dependability, and respect for others.

Herb was a lifelong communicant of Saint Mary's Church in Glens Falls, where his faith remained an important part of his life.

He was also a proud member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the Knights of Columbus, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians, serving two years as President of the latter. He valued friendship and tradition, and he loved golf for the simple reason that it meant time spent with lifelong friends.

He came alive in the company of others. He loved good conversation, easy laughter, and sitting among people he cared about.

In retirement, he and Libby treasured their winters in Florida, where days were filled with dinners, golf, and friendships that meant so much to them. What he loved most was not the sunshine, but the sense of belonging.

Above all, Herb was devoted to his family, and especially to the love of his life, Libby. For nearly 57 years, she was his constant companion, his steady partner, and his greatest blessing. Their marriage was built on loyalty, understanding, and a deep affection that only grew stronger with time. Whether it was raising their daughters, building a home together, traveling, or simply sharing morning coffee, Herb was happiest when he was with Libby. He adored her, respected her, and never took a single day with her for granted.

He was endlessly proud of his daughters, Mary Beth and Amy, always their steady supporter and loudest cheerleader and he never missed a chance to say so. If his daughters were his pride, his granddaughters were his pure joy. Isabella and Harley brought out his softest side. He delighted in their stories, their milestones, and simply being "Papa." Watching them grow filled him with a happiness that was unmistakable, and his eyes would light up at the mention of their names.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Elizabeth "Libby" Sprott of Glens Falls; his daughter, Mary Beth and her husband, Ewart Morris, of Knightdale, N.C.; his daughter, Amy and her husband, Shawn McDonald, of Hopkinton, Mass.; his cherished granddaughters, Isabella and Harley McDonald of Hopkinton, Mass.; his sister-in-law, Carol Krebs of Mendon, N.Y.; his brother-in-law, Daniel Hickey and his wife, Terry, of Glens Falls, N.Y.; and several treasured nieces and nephews.

Herb will be remembered for his steady presence, his deep devotion to his family and friends, and the quiet but powerful pride he carried for those he loved most.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff of Tower 3 at Glens Falls Hospital; to Dr. Paul Filion and his staff at Irongate Center; to the team at Dialysis Clinic, Inc in Glens Falls; to Dr. Amy Hogan-Moulton and her staff; and to the dedicated staff of the local United States Department of Veterans Affairs office for their care, support, and kindness.

Calling hours will be held at Singleton Sullivan Potter Funeral Home, 407 Bay Road, Queensbury on Sunday, March 8, 2026, from 2 to 5 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 9, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Saint Mary's Church, 62 Warren Street in Glens Falls.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Herb's memory may make a donation to Saint Mary's Church/School or to Southern Adirondack Independent Living (SAIL) of Glens Falls.

Those who wish may make online condolences at the funeral home website sbfuneralhome.com.

So sorry to just see this .. I just loved his quiet but witty sense of humor. I loved that he could make me smile every time I took care of him. I will miss him terribly. I was looking forward to seeing him and telling him how good I golfed in Fla . Miss you John

I've known Herbie since kindergarten at St. Mary's Academy. I was in his class in 2nd grade the afternoon his mom pulled him out school. I never knew what happened other than his mother was not to happy about what was happening at school.
I spent many a Friday night during our junior and senior years at Hart's Pizza. There were several of us doing 'stuff' that crazy teenagers do. I left Glens Falls in '59 but came back to school reunions which Herbie usually attended to catch up on what was happening in my old town. Will miss him and his big laugh.
Libby, I am praying for you.

Libby, you and I were just talking on FB and we didn't realize that Herbie was so sick. I'm so very sorry for your loss and I can only imagine your pain and heart break. The only consolation is that you shared a perfect life with him for many years and he's in heaven now.
