Mary K. Duval
March 4, 1920 - Jan. 1, 2023
SARATOGA SPRINGS - Mary K. Duval passed away on January 1, 2023 at home surrounded by her loving family. Born March 4, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Karl and Louise Hazard Voskanyan. Mary graduated from Saratoga Springs High School and went on to attend Skidmore College before marrying Robert John "Jack" Duval on October 20, 1940.
Along with her husband and son David, Mary owned and operated Duval Vending, Co. and Hazard's Music. In the late 1960s they also operated the youth center located at the corner of Broadway and Spring Street. She was known as the "Neighborhood Mom"; watching, loving, and taking care of many neighborhood children, who many now as adults still refer to her as "Aunt" Mary. She was a past President of the Women's Republican Club, as well as a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the St. Peter's Mother Club, a lifetime member of the Catholic Daughters of America; and on her 100th birthday became an Honorary Elk.
Mary loved to travel, and in her lifetime that love took her not only across the country but the world. She has been on many cruises and visited Alaska, France, Russia, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Canada, California, and the east coast- but she would always return to Marathon, FL where she spent her winters. The city even honored her on her 100th birthday, making her an official "conch" ("konk").
In addition to her parents, Mary is predeceased by her husband of 65 years Robert "Jack"; two sons: Robert John Duval II and David Alfred Duval, Sr.; two sisters: Louise Welch and Margaret Maloney; her brother-in-law, Timothy Maloney; and her grandson, Christopher Duval. She leaves behind her daughter, Marianne (John) Still; daughter-in-law, Maureen Duval; two grandsons: Robert John Duval III and David A. Duval, Jr. (Sydney); two granddaughters: Mary Jo Nilsson (Peter) and Carol Still (Erin Goodspeed); four great-grandsons: Robert Duval and David, Patrick, and Jack Nilsson; her great-granddaughter, Laura Duval and many nieces and nephews. All, who will remember her fondly especially when they sing her trademark song, "A Bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck."
Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 7p.m. Friday, January 6, 2023 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway (518-584-5373).

Mary was a life-long friend of my parents Rose and Don Lee since 1956 -- when I met Mary's daughter Marianne in kindergarten at St. Peter's. Mary's son David became my Confirmation sponsor in the 1960s. With her contacts in the juke box business, Mary would find hard-to-get records of classical music and opera for me -- impossible to find in Saratoga at that time. She remained friends with my mother Rose when both of them were in their 90s. Many happy memories of Mary and the Duval family, who always had a twinkle in her eye!

Mary was a dear friend and a true force for good in Saratoga Springs. I first got to know her as a high school Junior when she and Jane Wait chaperoned our trip to France with Dr. Al Remaley. She had incredible energy and could easily keep up with the “kids”. Since then we became lifelong friends. I was blessed to have known her.
I wrote with wonderful memories of Mary- who we will love and miss.

What a beautiful life Mary lived. Sending my deepest sympathy and peace to everyone for your loss. I will fondly remember swimming in her pool as a kid with my cousin Carol and my sisters, riding bikes around her driveway and having a blast. May all her greatness and kindness be remembered. My best wishes to all. Carly Still

I did not have the pleasure of knowing Mary, but wanted to just say that I wish I had. Her obituary is so wonderfully written and as a fellow Republican woman, I can only imagine what it was like to have been President of the Women's Republican Club when she was President and I am so grateful for her hard work so that other women have one less fight to fight on behalf of all women- thank you Mary. I have heard wonderful things about her from her friends and I am so very sorry for your loss of such an amazing woman.

My grandmother was Lula Hazard (Hazard Produce boys). She married Ken Coulter of Johnston. My dad, also Ken Coulter fondly remembers Mary Duval. He says that Lula and Mary were very close as cousins and I believe Mary was a bridesmaid in Mary and Jacks wedding.
I never met my distant cousin but from the Coulter family I send sincere condolences to her family.

Mary was a breath of fresh air! Every time I saw her, she was always smiling. I had the pleasure of meeting her through my father's vending, Knobby's Records. Her son, Dave, and my father, Henry (Knobby), were quite the pair! They would help one another and I traveled with them while working for my father and will never forget the memories of the Duval family. May you find peace and happiness in the many years you had to spend with Mary. Blessings and warm regards to all! My brother, Henry (Hank), sends along his condolences as well!

Many great memories of Mary. She and my passed mother in law, Elaine Dunson were always together. Mary was always part of Elaines family in so many ways. Mary hosted my wedding reception at her home and several yearly events which I attended over the years. I enjoyed her visit to Florida at my home with Elaine- great fun. She definitely was part of the fabric of Saratoga. God bless you Mary rest in peace and say hello to all up there.
