Robert D. Farrell
SCHENECTADY – Kind, ever-curious and dependably upbeat throughout his long life, Robert D. Farrell, 96, passed away peacefully at home on April 23.
Bob and his beloved wife, Peg, who cared for him until the end, remained close to their blended family of nine children, 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Bob and Peg were a couple in constant motion during their 40-year marriage. They were globe-trotters, making countless trips around North America and visited all seven continents. They stopped counting the countries they visited when the tally reached 70.
Born and raised in Glens Falls, Bob enrolled at Dartmouth College after graduating from Glens Falls High School. He served in the U.S. Army in Europe after World War II and returned to Dartmouth to complete his degree work in zoology. He spent 37 years as an educator in the North Colonie School District, 14 as a teacher and 23 as an elementary school principal.
One of the great joys of Bob's life was his family. He and Peg treated each one of the grandchildren to their own special trip when they turned 14.
Bob is survived by his wife, Peg, his children: Kathy (Mike) Kane, Nancy (Bob) Jones, James (Robin), Jill Carr; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Bob also considered Peg's five children and their families as his own.
Bob's family will celebrate him privately. Contributions in Bob's memory may be made to Doctors Without Borders.

Robert Farrell was the best teacher I ever had! He inspired a love of learning that lasts to this day! I taught physical education and wellness and coached for 34 years in the city of Boston. I thought of Mr. Farrell so many times throughout life.
I was a 1960 graduate of Loudonville School. Mr. Farrell was my 6th grade teacher. I have never been so challenged in my life. He prepared us all to meet challenges head on, and to succeed!
In our 6th grade class we read the New York Times weekly, learned 20 vocabulary words weekly, and learned basic geometry. He would sit on the top of his chair and read Dickens to us. We were always discussing world events and desig ingredients projects. He anticipated the Middle East issues that we have today and Russia/ China issues. He made us think, and he cared so much! Our fitness was important too. I never remember us staying inside at recess. We would play soccer in the snow or rain!
Even though I moved to the Boston area, I have thought of him often, and have been so appreciative of how he affected my life and helped me meet challenges and work well with people.
I am so glad he lived to be 96. I remember hearing years ago that he had some heart issues. But clearly, his heart survived, and he loved you all so much.
My thoughts and prayers are with you. The world has lost a great teacher and wonderful human being!
