David White Obituary

DAVID GENE WHITE, 61, OF PHOENIXVILLE David Gene White, affectionately known as "Mr. White", went to be with his maker on Sunday, December 1, 2013. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the first child of Glenn and Betty White. He was raised in Boothwyn, PA. He attended Garnet Valley High School until the 10th grade before graduating from Delaware Valley Christian School in 1970. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Lebanon Valley College in 1974. He began his teaching career at Northern Chester County Technical School that same September as a Mathematics teacher. He retired from teaching in 2009 after almost 36 years. While at "the Tech", Mr. White was loved by his students and respected by his colleagues. He enjoyed a reputation among his colleagues of teaching "bell-to-bell". He coached both varsity basketball and junior varsity baseball and served as Director of Intramural Programs. He was also considered their all-around unofficial cheerleader at sporting events. He began his 36 year dedication to the Phoenixville Babe Ruth Association in 1977 thanks to John Devlin. As league administrator he umpired, worked on scheduling, served as a statistician, worked with the umpires, worked on the field, and did their public relations work as well. He was selected District 2 Commissioner of Babe Ruth in 1978 and served for two years and was selected again in 2000 where he continued as District 2 Commissioner until his death. He was one of three from Phoenixville selected for the inaugural class entering the league 1999 Pennsylvania Babe Ruth Hall of Fame, chosen for his work with Phoenixville's 13-15 year-old teams. He spent 31 years as the voice of Phantom Football and was honored last year with a trophy depicting a microphone. The Press Box will never be the same. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #1273, the Slovak Club of Phoenixville where he served as Treasurer for numerous years, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Polish American Citizens Club, the Italian Club, the West End Social Club, and Friendship Firehouse. Throughout the years, he played Santa at holiday parties for the children at many of these clubs. He currently served as Vice President of the Phoenixville Club Dart League and was a former member of the Schuylkill Valley Pool League. He loved to shoot horseshoes and sponsored two tournaments on a yearly basis. His heart was bigger than the world and he made an impact on the lives of the thousands of people he met over the years. No one will ever be able to fill his shoes. Surviving him are his parents: Glenn and Betty White of Lakeland, FL. Additionally, David is survived by his siblings: Karen De Oliveira, of Lakeland, FL, Daniel White also of Lakeland, FL, and Thomas White of Schenectady, NY. He was predeceased in death by a brother Timothy White. A Celebration of his life will be held Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at the Technical College High School (NCCTS, CAT Pickering - Phoenixville), 1580 Charlestown Road, Phoenixville, PA 19460.
