Aclen B. Lewis

Rhinebeck - Aclen B. Lewis passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2014, surrounded by her family at home in Rhinebeck, NY.She was a graduate of Hunter College, New York City and taught elementary grades before retiring as a Principal.

Born in New York City she was the daughter of John Andrew and Maye (Fisher) Barber, Her husband of 39 years, Thomas L. Lewis Jr., predeceased her on October 5, 1987.

Mrs. Lewis was an active member of the First Church of Christ Science, Poughkeepsie, NY. Mrs. Lewis served on the church board several times, was chairman of the music committee, and served as first reader for three years. Mrs. Lewis also worked in the Christian Science Reading Room.

Mrs. Lewis was a member of the U.S. Africa Partnership Fund raising committee at the University of Albany's School of Social Welfare. She made several trips to Africa including Liberia, Ethiopia, and South Africa. Mrs. Lewis also traveled to Egypt.

Mrs. Lewis is survived by her son Hassan Abdul-Malik and his fiancée Carmella; three grand children, Jamal Lewis, his wife Mikini, and their children Jordan, Madison, McKenzie and Marissa; Jason Lewis and his children Malcolm and James and Kyra Johnson. She is also survived by a sister and her husband Mary and Clifford (Alex) Phillips and their children, Robert and Paula; and a sister-in-law Irma Jenkins.

Funeral services and interment are at the Rhinebeck Cemetery and are private.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, 51 West Market St, Rhinebeck, NY.
