Albert Bauman Obituary

Albert J. Bauman

Poughkeepsie - Albert J. Bauman was born February 18, 1937 in the Bronx, NY and died May 18, 2021 in Poughkeepsie, NY. He was the son of the late Henry and Dora (Bassist) Bauman.

Al married his wife Lydia (Rudin) Bauman whom he met at the City College of New York on June 19, 1960 at the Pelham Parkway Jewish Center. They have two sons. Sean and Daniel of New York and a daughter Bonnie (Kevin Carroll) and granddaughters Hailey and Megan of Ohio. Al also is survived by his brother David of Florida and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Al was educated at PS 75 followed by the Bronx High School of Science. At Bronx Science, Al played on the school's PSAL high school handball championship team, the school's first athletic championship in any sport. His granddaughters still cannot believe that grandpa was an athlete. After Bronx Science, Al received a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from CCNY and then a Masters degree in Engineering from NYU.

He was a licensed Professional Engineer in New York and in Florida.

Upon graduating from CCNY in July 1959, Al went to work for the NYS Department of Transportation as a Junior Engineer in their Long Island office. In February of 1965 he received a promotion to Senior Engineer in the Poughkeepsie Regional Office and in April 1989 he was named the Hudson Valley Regional Director, the largest region in the State. He retired in 1998 and worked for a few years for HDR, a multi-national Transportation Consulting firm. During his career at the Department of Transportation, Al was involved in and responsible for most of the major transportation construction projects in the seven counties immediately north of New York City and worked closely with community leaders in the development of these projects.

In 1995 he was named "Man of the Year in the Construction Industry in Westchester and Putnam Counties" by the American Heart Association.

He belonged to several organizations, such as the Alumni Associations of Bronx Science, CCNY and NYU. He was a quarter century member of AASHTO; lifetime member of the NYSATE; and the RPEA.

Al and Lydia joined Temple Beth-El in Poughkeepsie in April 1965 immediately after relocating to the Hudson Valley.

Al was a natural tenor and sang with Temple Beth-El's high holiday choir starting in 1976 and eventually became a soloist during the Jewish high-holidays. He was an original member of the Shalom Singers. He sang with the Dutchess County Interfaith chorus and the Sacred Bridge choir. The Sacred Bridge choir was composed of singers from Christ Episcopal Church and Temple Beth-El.

Al also performed with the County Players in Kismet and the Hudson Valley Gilbert and Sullivan Society in Iolanthe, but his responsibilities at work kept him too busy to perform in more theatrical performances.

After he retired from work, he joined the Marist College Center for Lifetime Study (CLS) and served a two year term as president of the organization. Under the auspices of CLS, Al was a volunteer tutor for more than seven years with a second grade class in the Clinton School in the city of Poughkeepsie.

Graveside services will be Friday, May 21, 2021 at 10AM in Temple Beth-El Cemetery, Poughkeepsie, NY. The family requests contributions be made to Temple Beth-El in Al's memory. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wm. G. Miller & Son FH, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.
