Probably the last person I would consider "emblematic" of the Pawling I remember. A truly wise lady with a discreetly-snarky sense of humor. A treasure has passed.

Having retired from dentistry several years ago and moving out of the area, it takes a while for news to reach me. Its rare that I visibly cry when I hear of the passing of one of my patients...not this time. Charlotte and I would talk and tell jokes each time she came in for an appointment and we really enjoyed each others' company. What a vibrant personality she had. Pawling has lost one of its iconic characters and my heart is saddened beyond description. God speed Charlotte.

Well, where to begin. Miss Whaley (had wayyyyy to much respect to ever call her Charlotte) lived right across the street from me for the first 20 years of my life. I have never met nor seen a harder working woman than her. I can't tell you how many times I would be riding my bike or walking up/down South Street and there she was, either mowing the field next to her property, or, taking care of her enormous property: mowing, raking, planting, gardening, weeding . . . the lady was a one-woman force of nature! I remember one time as a young teen I had developed an interest in stamp collecting, and I had mentioned it to her in conversation while running an errand. She told me that she thought that there might be some old letters/envelopes in the barn, and that if I was careful, she'd let me go up there and look around. It was amazing! Indeed there were lots of old letters and I was able to get a bunch of older US stamps, none that had any particular value, but to a young kid and budding collector? It was a treasure. And that was Miss Whaley, a true giver. May you rest in peace, sweet lady.

I used to visit Charlette (at the bank) when I visited my Aunt Sophie Dykeman during the summer. She would give me a brand new dollar bill! She was a wonderful person! This photo is taken with my Mother Adeline Woodin Hoffman and Charlotte (cousins)
