Bernier
Highland - Christopher J. Bernier, "Chris" to family & friends, left us suddenly on June 17, 2014 at Albany Medical Center, after a short illness. He was just 32 yrs old. The eldest son of Dave & Marie Bernier, Chris was born in Poughkeepsie, NY on October 18, 1981. Chris was a pillar within our family, always the reliable one willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed his help.
A 2001 graduate of Highland High School, Chris has been employed for the past six years as a World Trade Shipping Operator at IBM Poughkeepsie for Geodis Global Solutions, Inc. He made the small town of Highland his home for the past 24 years, living within a couple of miles of both his brothers, his loving grandmother and many of his aunts, uncles & cousins. His parents only recently left the area when they relocated to FL. Our close knit family will miss Chris dearly.
Although Chris enjoyed his job, he dedicated a tremendous amount of time to numerous sports hobbies. He traveled to NHRA drag races with his uncles, cousins, & friends, organized an annual NCAA basketball pool, and cheered for the 49ers during football season. Chris was the ultimate Kentucky Wildcats fan. Anyone who knew him, knew he lived in his University of Kentucky colors and rarely wore anything that didn't say"UK" or "Wildcats". Chris' other passion was holiday decorating. He was over the top with his Christmas lights and transformed his house into a horror movie set each Halloween. He even dressed up and scared all the trick-or-treaters.
Chris' laid back personality and quiet demeanor made him easy to be around. His dry sense of humor and sarcastic quips will be sorely missed at his grandmother's Sunday dinner table. He loved to be with his family and spent countless hours playing with his baby niece and much younger cousins. He also devoted a great deal of time to his beloved Gramma. They shared a very special relationship and he generously assisted with whatever she needed. He never missed a birthday celebration or holiday family gathering. He loved a good party! Those gatherings will never be the same without him.
Chris is survived by his parents, Dave & Marie Bernier, of New Smyrna Beach, FL. His brother, Alex Bernier and his wife, Michelle, and their daughter, Ava, of Highland; his brother, Nicholas Bernier, of Highland; his adored maternal grandmother, Tina Cerniglia, of Highland, and too many to name, very close uncles, aunts, and cousins. He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Joseph Cerniglia, his paternal grandparents, Jerome & Diana Bernier, and his young cousins, Joey Cerniglia, Nicole Cerniglia, and Jake Cerniglia.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 pm on Friday, June 20 at The Michael Torsone Memorial Funeral Home, Inc.38 Main Street in Highland, NY 12528.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am on Saturday, June 21 at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church in Highland.
Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to A-T Children's Project, Make a Wish Foundation or St. Jude's Childrens Hospital.

it seems only yesterday but it's been four years now since we were in the U.S. and I remember the long time spent together swimming in the pool with Mike Leo Eugene and all joking and playing, eating favorite dishes made by Pupa aunt and grandmother Tina ! I can not believe it's not right. Elena and I are shocked and close to all of you on Saturday, we did say a Mass in memory of Chris and just go to Padre Pio I'll remember him and smile and say a Mass again! we love you a big hug. Chris, I look over at your chair every day, and I am still in such denial. You have been with me for over a year now, and I have never regretted my decision for making you my World Trade Partner. Your work ethic and always being available when I needed you, meant so much to me. I never had to worry about you doing what was needed for World Trade, because you were committed, to World Trade.I will miss you so much, and it will be a very long time, for me to look over at your desk, and truly grasp, that you will not be sitting in that chair. Right now, I am waiting for you to return from Vacation, or Sickness, but not that I will never see you again. I keep playing back your good mornings, and every morning I continue to wait for you to come through the door at 9:00. RIP Chris, and know, you may be gone, but never forgotten.
