Clitheroe "Clue" H. Engel

LAGRANGE - Clitheroe "Clue" H. Engel, 90, a longtime resident of Poughkeepsie, died peacefully on Monday, December 17, 2012 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. She was born in Brooklyn, NY on August 27, 1922, the daughter of Philip and Clitheroe (Dean) Hatheway. She was a graduate of the Packer Collegiate Institute. During WWII, she served as a nurse's aide at Brooklyn Hospital. In 1952, Clue married Dr. Walter Engel, Jr. and then moved to Poughkeepsie in 1953 to help her husband start a dental practice. She was an early member of the Dental Assistant Association and at that time was involved in the Dutchess County Dental Society's theater troop, promoting health education in schools. Clue was generous with her time and volunteered for several organizations, including Meals-on-Wheels and Mental Health America of Dutchess County. She was also a member of the Junior League, an organization that promotes community volunteerism, a member of the Mayflower Society and the Pilgrim John Howland Society. She was a longtime member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Poughkeepsie, where she sang with the Helen Baldwin Singers (choir). She is survived by her husband, Walter; her older brother, Dean Hatheway of Virginia Beach, VA; her two sons Dean of Rockaway, NJ, and Peter and his partner Lisa, of South Hadley, MA; and her many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 2pm at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Poughkeepsie. The family respectfully asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Poughkeepsie, 67 S. Randolph Ave., Poughkeepsie, 12601.
