Dolores D. O'Connell
Fishkill - Dolores D. O'Connell (Garcia), 82 of the Town of Fishkill, NY passed away at her home on July 25, 2018. She was born on September 6, 1935 in Bangor, Maine and was the daughter of Fernando "Pepe" Garcia and Annie McCarty Garcia. Dolores married her high-school sweetheart, Arthur W. O'Connell, Sr. on May 19, 1956 in Peekskill, NY. She received her Associates Degree in Nutrition and retired from Vassar Brother's Hospital.
Dolores was a member of St. Martin de Porres Church in Poughkeepsie and along with her husband Art, volunteered as a Eucharistic Minister at Vassar Hospital and The Avalon Assisted Living Facility. Beginning in the 1970's up until her passing, she was involved in the Cursillo Movement. This group within the Roman Catholic Church is dedicated to spreading the Word of God and helping people form a closer relationship with Jesus Christ by living life of devotion, spiritual study and action. Dolores was also a Blood Drive volunteer with the American Red Cross in the 1980's. She was an avid reader and a faithful New York Mets fan. Her greatest joy and happiness came from the time she spent with her family.
She is predeceased by Arthur, her husband of 60 years who passed away May 28, 2016. Survivors include her son, Arthur W. O'Connell, Jr of Fishkill, NY; daughter MaryAnn Gross of Peoria, AZ; son Joseph (Dina) O'Connell of Petersburg, NJ; daughter Christine Cusack of Bayport, NY. Grandchildren include Brian, Jr., Christian, Tracey, Gabrielle, Gregory, Isabella, Emma, Caitlin, Ryan, Grace and great-grandson, Brian, III. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Dolores' family would like to thank the staff of Hudson Valley Hospice for the dedicated and compassionate care she received during the last weeks of her life.
Dolores lived a life of service and her final act of giving back to the world was the donation of her body for medical research to the Anatomical Gift Program at Albany Medical College. A Memorial Mass will be held at Mount Alvernia Chapel at The Mount Alvernia Retreat Center, 158 Delavergne Ave, Wappingers Falls, NY on Wednesday, August 1st at 10:30 a.m. Family and friends are invited to gather for luncheon to celebrate Dolores' life immediately following the Mass.
