Grete Sorter

Carpenter

Poughkeepsie - Grete Sorter Carpenter, 91, of Poughkeepsie NY, passed away peacefully on May 9th 2013, at The Pines At Poughkeepsie nursing home. Grete was born in Vienna, Austria on July 14th, 1921 to Gustav and Emilie Sorter. She married Charles E. Carpenter Jr. on June 19th, 1948 at the 15th Street Friends Meeting in NYC. Upon graduating from Dutchess Community College, at the age of 55, she worked as a VISTA volunteer, placing seniors with handicaps in voluntary positions. Grete also worked as a Program Coordinator for the Senior Citizens Association. She retired from her position as the Volunteer Coordinator from the Dutchess County Office For The Aging. Grete was also very active in the Poughkeepsie Friends Meeting and taught Sunday school for many years.

Grete said as a child that her goal in life was to be wife and mother. As an adult she pursued this goal by becoming a loving wife and mother. Grete was the organizer of the home. She enjoyed making the house a home and made a special effort to plan family activities and trips. The home was always a fun place to be during the holidays whether she was getting dressed up as a mummy for Halloween or decorating the house for Christmas. Grete was very proud of her Austrian heritage and one could see many traditional Austrian items around the house.

Grete is survived by her husband Charles E. Carpenter Jr., her sons Charles E. Carpenter ||| and Kenneth S. Carpenter, as well as her daughter Margaret E. Deery. She is also survived by her granddaughter Katie Carpenter, grandson Alexander S. Deery, and granddaughter Elizabeth D. Deery.

Grete is remembered by my family as a wonderful mother and neighbor. She welcomed us over at Christmas to witness the lighting of the candles on the tree - something I know we will never forget. I am glad to have known her and to have had a cherished lifelong friendship with her daughter Peg. You are all in my thoughts and prayers!

Was sorry to hear of the passing of Greta. I have spoken to my sister, Betty Williams to advise her. Both Bet and I remember the 4th of July picnics with the Carrothers, the Hendersons, the Carpenters and our family, the Williams family. Have many fond memories of Greta and we send our prayers and thoughts to Chuck and his family. Peg and Skip Scutt and Bet Williams , all in Florida.

We had the pleasure of working with Greta at the Office For the Aging in the last 1980s. We loved hearing her stories of Austria and her life experiences. Rich & I would sometimes disagree and Greta would "send "us to "our rooms". I always told her she liked him best.
We treasure the memories and send our most sincere condolences to Mr. Carpenter and the family.
