Howard Kirtland Obituary

Dr. Howard Henry Kirtland III

Franklin, PA - Dr. Howard Henry Kirtland III, 73, a Franklin, PA oncologist passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, July 17, 2017.

Born in El Paso, Texas on June 23, 1944, he was the son of the late Howard Henry Kirtland Jr. and Yolanda T. Daros Kirtland. He was raised in Poughkeepsie, NY, where he attended Holy Trinity Grade School and Our Lady of Lourdes High School. Dr. Kirtland graduated from Georgetown University and Cornell Medical School.

Following medical school, he enlisted in the US Army where he proudly served during the Vietnam War. In 1979, he settled in Franklin, PA where he began his medical practice. In 2005, he established the Kirtland Cancer Foundation to give back to his community by helping families affected by cancer.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Barbara G. Kirtland and his children: Howard Henry Kirtland IV (Robyn) of LaGrange, KY, Dr. David Rand Kirtland (Jillian) of Marietta, OH, Dr. Robert Kradel (Denise) of Youngsville, NC, and District Judge Matthew T. Kirtland of Franklin, PA and his grandchildren: Sophia, Samantha, Claire, and Henry Rand Kirtland.

He is also survived by his brother, Dr. William Kirtland (Patricia) of Hyde Park and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his younger brother, Anthony Blakeslee Kirtland whose wife, Kathleen survives in Salisbury, MD.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Friday, July 21 at St. Patrick's Church in Franklin, PA. Memorial donations may be made to the Kirtland Cancer Foundation, PO Box 108, Franklin, PA 16323.

Please accept my sympathy at Howard's passing. I remember him from OLL in Poughkeepsie, NY. He was a very friendly and bright fellow.
