I have fond memories of Jay as a fun loving kid, full of energy, with a real zest for life. It was nice to see him at the most recent class reunion, still sharing the warm friendly smile I remember from elementary and high school. Jay was a special person who will be missed by so many. My deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences go out to the entire family.

"As I look up at the stars at night
And think of times shared
Memories come flooding back
They all show how much you cared
Your kind and gentle nature
Your smile so big and wide"

Many thoughts and prayers to the Mctiernan families. Jay was a great kid. I have fond memories of when my dad coached him in little league. As a young girl I secretly had a "crush" on him as did many of my friends. Wondered if he ever knew how much he was adored. He certainly had charm. I am sure that he will truly be missed. May God bless all of you in this most difficult time...

I have been thinking about what to write all week through the tears. Although our paths did not cross after high school very much, when I thought of Jay over the years, it was always with very fond memories. We were neighbors when we were little and stayed friends throughout our young lives. I think about our long conversations when it was just the two of us either sitting on my front porch or sitting at the top of the path near his house on 1st Ave., many of which were about my boyfriend or his girlfriend troubles. He always had a way of making me laugh. He thought he was quite the ladies man and what a charmer he was! I remember being on the back of a moped that he was driving and him trying to scare the you know what out of me. It worked, by the way. Of course, he thought it was hysterical. There are so many memories but the most important one of all is that he was my friend! May God Bless Jay and his family and may his two beautiful little boys remember him well, always! Rest in Peace my friend.
Love, Connie (Wood) Shepherd

My Dad taught for many years at IHS with Jay's Dad, the wonderful Mr McT, and thought the world of him and his family. I just wanted to express my deepest condolences on the loss of Jay. Even though I hadn't seen him since I graduated 32 years ago, I have fond memories of him as a teammate on the IHS basketball team and have always had an image of him burned in my memory of him making a big shot in a game against Johnstown. I was under the basket boxing out and the ball went in...the crowd went nuts and he did this big fist pump in the air. That image of excitement on his face has always stuck in my head and is a wonderful memory of a wonderful time of life. Jay was a great guy and a great competitor. I only wish I could have known him in our mature years as he and I apparently shared a love for film and filmmaking. I know we would have probably talked on and on about such topics. Please know that all of you are in the thoughts and prayers of all the Cunninghams. I'm sure that Mr McT is welcoming him with happy and open arms. God bless, McTiernan family, and know that our loved ones are always nearby. Here's a wonderful poem that will give you hope and courage:
Death is Nothing at All
By Henry Scott Holland
Death is nothing at all.
I have only slipped away to the next room.
I am I and you are you.
Whatever we were to each other,
That, we still are.
Call me by my old familiar name.
Speak to me in the easy way
which you always used.
Put no difference into your tone.
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.
Laugh as we always laughed
at the little jokes we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me. Pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word
that it always was.
Let it be spoken without effect.
Without the trace of a shadow on it.
Life means all that it ever meant.
It is the same that it ever was.
There is absolute unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind
because I am out of sight?
I am but waiting for you.
For an interval.
Somewhere. Very near.
Just around the corner.
All is well.

Rest In Eternal Peace
Jay Andrew McTiernan
Safely Home
by Unknown
I am home in Heaven, dear ones;
Oh, so happy and so bright!
There is perfect joy and beauty
In this everlasting light.
All the pain and grief is over,
Every restless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever,
Safely home in Heaven at last.
Did you wonder I so calmly
Trod the valley of the shade?
Oh! but Jesus' arm to lean on,
Could I have one doubt or dread?
Then you must not grieve so sorely,
For I love you dearly still;
Try to look beyond earth's shadows,
Pray to trust our Father's Will.
There is work still waiting for you,
So you must not idly stand;
Do it now, while life remaineth--
You shall rest in Jesus' land.
When that work is all completed,
He will gently call you Home;
Oh, the rapture of that meeting,
Oh, the joy to see you come!
We are keeping the McTiernan family in our thoughts and prayers.
With our deepest sympathy,
Leisa (Day) & Alan Merrick

RIP Jay... Your spirit will forever live on in your children's laughs and smiles. The world was a better place because you were in it. You have touched us all through your grit and determination you endured during your struggle. Heaven just got a bit brighter with you in it. You will be missed but never forgotten. Weez
