Kathryn Amann Obituary

Kathryn Jane

Amann

Rhinebeck - Kathryn Jane Amann, 65, quietly passed into the hands of her Lord on August 3rd, 2011 at home after her long fight with lung cancer and myelodisplastic syndrome. The firstborn child of Charles and Bertha Svatek, Kathy began her life in Brooklyn, NY on July 10, 1946. In her childhood and as a young lady, Kathy was the pride and joy of her family. After graduating as class salutatorian from Hauppauge High School on Long Island, Kathy attended and graduated from New Paltz State College, where she fell in love with the Hudson valley.

On December 16, 1967 she married George Amann and remained his devoted wife for 43 years. Kathy and George moved to the Hudson valley in 1977, and lived in Clinton Corners and Rhinebeck for the ensuing 34 years. In 1985, they adopted their beloved daughter, Martha. Kathy worked for the Hyde Park school system at both the Haviland Middle School and F.D. Roosevelt High School 22 years. While at F.D. Roosevelt, Kathy served as vice-president for the local union, retiring in 2002 to be with her husband.

Kathy is survived by her loving husband, George; daughter, Martha Jenkins, and son-in-law, Jim; parents, Charles and Betty Svatek of Smithtown, NY; brother, Andrew Svatek, and his wife, Susan, of Shelton, CT; brother, John Svatek, and his wife, Diane, of Schaghticoke, NY; sister, Elin Coleman, and her husband, Geoff, of Potsdam, NY; brother, Thomas Svatek, and his wife, Alyson, of St. James, NY; and goddaughter, Jessica Davis, and her husband, Arthur, of Schaghticoke; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Kathy was a devout communicant at St. Timothy Lutheran church for 34 years, took charge of the church Adopt-a-Family program, and served the congregation as financial secretary.

Kathy was an insatiable reader who also loved hot air balloons, llamas, puffins, traveling, and gardening, but her deepest devotion was always to her family and friends. She was invariably among the very first to offer assistance when needed - without being asked. Kathy's selflessness and concern for the needs of others garnered her the love of all those who knew her. Kathy was an angel who will be greatly missed by all whose lives she touched.

Calling hours for Kathy will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm, Sunday, August 7, 2011 at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.

Funeral services will be at 11 am, Monday, August 8th at the funeral home. Vicar Wayne Olson and Rev. Donald Hoger will officiate.

In keeping with Kathy's wishes, cremation and interment of her ashes in Calverton National Cemetery, Long Island, will take place at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Timothy Lutheran Church, 1348 Rte. 9G, Hyde Park, NY 12538.
