Olive Simmons Obituary

O. Jane Simmons

Poughkeepsie - Olive Jane Simmons, 75, of Poughkeepsie, New York, passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, March 30, 2013. Jane lost her courageous battle with cancer and now is at rest and in peace with her new life in Christ.

She was born March 10, 1938 in Rhinebeck, New York, the daughter of the late Irma J. Garberino and George Alley Briggs. Her sister, Mary Ellen Sutton, and brother preceded her in death.

Jane was a longtime resident of Rhinebeck, graduated from Rhinebeck High School, and attended the former Krissler Business Institute. She was employed by Dutchess Community College and worked in the library for 33 years.

She loved her grandchildren dearly. She was a very special grandma who always made time for each and every one of them. She loved the holidays, especially Christmas time, it was her favorite. She enjoyed reading, music, dance and travelling on cruises with her very close friends. Jane was a very special wife, mom, daughter and friend. She had an incredible, infectious smile.

She is survived by her husband of fifty-five years, Richard Lester Simmons; two daughters, Victoria Lynne Kennett and husband, John P., of Stanfordville, NY, and Patricia Ann Borowsky and her fiancée, Jon Zoda of Poughkeepsie; four grandchildren, Jennifer Lynne Kennett, Jaimee Marie Kennett, Zachary Richard Borowsky and Alec John Borowsky. She also leaves behind a special niece, Carol Gearhart and her loving Godchild, Taryn Krause.

The family wishes to gratefully thank all the nurses and staff at the Dyson Center and Hospice, Inc. of Dutchess County.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm, Wednesday, April 3rd at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. James A. Garisto at 10 am, Thursday, April 4th, at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel of St. Peter's Parish, 299 Hudson View Dr., Poughkeepsie.

Burial will follow in the family plot in Rhinebeck Cemetery.

Jane's family respectfully requests that memorial donations be made to the Dyson Center for Cancer Care Foundation, c/o VBMC, 45 Reade Place, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601, or, the Dutchess County SPCA, 636 Violet Ave., Hyde Park, NY 12538.

You will always be a second family to me. I do not even have to try to tell you how much I will miss her and how big of an empty space she leaves in my heart. My thoughts and love are with you all and I wish I was there with you and I wish I could have been there for her these last few years. I did't sign my note to her because I could not see the spaces thru my tears but see will know who it is from. She knew you were with her in the end and how much you loved her and she cherished her role as a wife, mother and grandmother. She was proud of all your accomplishments and enjoyed sharing in your activities as much as she could. After I moved I always got the proud grandmother calls after games and plays and whatever was going on. She never stopped sharing your lives with me. She loved you all very much. May all your happy memories help ease the pain and emptiness you feel. Love you all. Donna

No one can ever replace what our special friendship has been for all these years. I will never forget that the last words I ever heard from you were "I love you" and they will stay in my heart forever along with all our wonderful memories. May your courage and outlook on life continue to be an inspiration to everyone that had the priviledge of being part of your life. We kept our word - we never said "Good Bye". I love you sister.
