Paul Auerbach Obituary

Dr. Paul S. Auerbach

Poughkeepsie - Dr. Paul S. Auerbach passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 19, 2020 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. Dr. Auerbach practiced Gastroenterology in the community for over thirty years. He was a kind and dedicated Physician, beloved by his patients. He was a true healer with a reverence for scientific rigor.

Paul was born on March 12, 1957 in Manhattan, NY to Zareth and Anita Auerbach. Raised on the Upper West Side of the City, he attended LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and spent much of his youth at the Central Park Tennis courts. He was a regionally ranked tennis player and talented teacher. He attended Hunter College and NYU Medical School.

The center of his life was his family. Paul instilled his deep love for classical music in all of his children. He loved animals, wildlife and time spent in nature. His clever and at times irreverent humor never concealed his caring and empathic heart. He will be deeply missed by his wife Cary, his children, Zoe, Eric, Jonathan, Alana, Nick, Christina and Josephine; his grandchildren Owen and Olive, his sister Debby and many cherished family members, friends and colleagues. Gifts in his memory may be made to the Wildlife Conservation Society or WQXR.

Services were private and have taken place. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wm. G. Miller & Son F.H., Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. If you wish to send an online condolence please visit our website at www.wmgmillerfuneralhome.com

This is so very heartbreaking. I too, was one of Dr Auerbach's many patients who's diagnosis saved my life, and for that I am forever grateful. If you talk to any colleague who had the privilege of working with him, they would immediately tell you he was the best of the best. He was always there and available with his kind and reassuring manor. it is not often in this day and age that you feel your doctor really "takes care of you" Dr Auerbach took care of his patients. I would often see him at our favorite restaurant with his beautiful wife Cary, always warm and friendly. I also remember seeing him at the Powerhouse theater several years ago, sitting a few rows in front of us, his wife on one side and his daughter on the other, her head lovingly resting on his shoulder. To me, a memorable and beautiful image of a kind and wonderful husband, father and doctor. He will be immensely missed, and is truly irreplaceable. My sincere and deepest condolences to his wife and family.

My deepest sympathies to the doctor's family. Dr. Auerbach was my doctor. He saved my life! He was a "No Nonsense" Doctor, but did so with kindness and understanding. You could always see his empathy in his eyes!
The world has certainly lost a wonderful doctor!

I will always miss you!!! This is so tough to deal with. We worked together every day, all day for years. I spent more time with you than I did my family and friends. We were constantly talking, sharing stories and joking. I truly valued your friendship and admired you as a mentor. Losing you is devastating to the core. You will always be my Pablo! Love you always! Love, Bonita

Dr. Auerbach was the first in a series of doctors that saved my life (colon cancer). Although I didn't know him well, he impressed me as being a true gentleman with a caring nature. Tears do not come easy for me, but upon seeing his obituary, they were running down my cheeks.
I want his family to know the high regard with which he will always be held.
I am sorry for your loss.

Paul and I knew each other only casually at Vassar Hosp but we often talked classical music. My last vivid memory with him was 10 yrs ago just before I retired and that was Max Bruch's Kol Nedrei for cello n orch. I remember him as a very genuine person, kind and gentle. My sincere condolences to the family. Ashok Shah, MD (nephrologist)
