Stanley Mersand Obituary

Stanley H Mersand

Pawling - Stanley Howard Mersand, 70, passed away peacefully on the evening of Friday, May 26, at Regional Hospice in Danbury, Connecticut.

Stan was a lifelong political enthusiast, often involved with the Village of Pawling at various levels. His last position was on the Village Board, and as Deputy Mayor. He also ran the Thomas E. Dewey Center in Pawling, dedicated to the life and career of his political mentor, and served as Dutchess County Historian for many years.

Stan spent over 30 years as a history teacher at Carmel High School in Carmel, NY before retiring and teaching at various area colleges. As the titular head of "The Heart Gang" - a band of patients from the Healthquest Heart Center in Poughkeepsie - Stan loved to plan social events for the group.

As a young man, Stan proudly served in the United States Army as a forward observer and intelligence analyst in Vietnam. The second son of Julius (d.) and Hilda Mersand (nee Liffland) (d.) of Pawling, Stan was predeceased by his sister Jennise, of Burbank, California and his beloved dogs King, Bootsie, Captain, Tootsie, Mollie, and Boo. He is survived by his wife, Christine (nee Baresich), his son Michael, daughter Rebecca, and dog Scout, all of Pawling, his brother Barry, nephew Alex, and niece Jenny, of Poughquag, Aunt Mary "Dolly" Liffland of Pawling, and numerous cousins throughout the area.

He is finally at rest...which would really annoy him, since he always liked to be busy.

In accordance with his wishes, a memorial party in honor of his life will be held by the family in the near future. In lieu of flowers, he wished that donations be made to the Hudson Valley SPCA, Disabled American Veterans, The American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Horn & Thomes, Inc. Funeral Home, 83 East Main Street, Pawling, NY. To leave an online condolence, please visit www.hornandthomesfuneralhome.com.

I have many fond memories of Mr. Mersand's Social Studies class at Carmel High School in 1985-86. The time he invited the late Ms. Andruk to give a slide show of her trip to the pyramids of Egypt was a highlight. The fact that the Dutchess county flags were lowered in his honor is very appropriate. RIP.

Four years ago today, Stan hosted friends and I to tour his museum. I was thinking of him and wondered how he was. And learned of his demise. So very sorry. What a good man he was, so generous in sharing education and enlightenment. My deepest condolences.

To the Mersand family,
May you find peace and comfort in all his shared memories. It was a pleasure to have him as a teacher, and quite a joy
when he needed repairs or parts at Bill Reynolds Garage. He will not be forgotten.
May he Rest in Peace

I was so sorry to hear of Stan's passing. I knew him from when I worked at The Sharon Playhouse. He was a long time patron and a wonderful person. I did look forward to seeing him each season and he was one of the people I knew I would miss when I moved away. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Christine, Rebecca and Michael: I am so deeply sorry for your loss. Stan was such a vibrant, caring person. He always filled up a room with his presence and spirit. Stan was a real force to reckon with and we miss his smile and his laughter. I know that my few words will not ease the pain of your loss, but I hope you can enjoy some small solace knowing that he touched so many peoples lives in a positive way. "..until you meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand."

to Stan's family I want to offer my heartfelt sympathy for your loss and Stan's passing. Over the many decades I always found Stan to be so very genuine and sincere - and always with a great story to tell me with a big smile. He had a warmth to him few people I know had which made him so very likable. He was a loyal friend and supporter. I will always value his service to me and Dutchess County as one of my department heads during the years he was my appointee as County Historian. I will cherish the memories of our time working together. William R. Steinhaus, Dutchess County Executive, retired.
