Patterson, Sr.
of Binghamton, N.Y.
David Kingsnorth Patterson, Sr., age 85, of Binghamton, N.Y., passed away peacefully at home in the presence of family on Sunday, October 26, 2008, from complications of Parkinson's disease. He was born on December 24, 1922 in Columbia, Mo. to Ruth Furbeck Patterson and Don Denham Patterson, Sr. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Don Denham Patterson, Jr. and Jerome Anthony Patterson, Sr. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marie Ann Bloomer Patterson; sons, David Kingsnorth Patterson, Jr., Ipswich, Mass., Don Denham Patterson, II (wife, Mary Beth), Owego, N.Y.; daughters, Susan Dennis Patterson Smith (husband, Glenn), Broomall, Pa. and Julie Ann Patterson Fago (husband, John), Bethel, Vt.; grandchildren, Michael E. Smith, Chicago, Ill., Kathryn I. Meeks (husband, Justin), Nashville, Tenn., Christina E. Horn (husband, Jason), Apex, N.C., Peter A. Smith, Broomall, Pa., and Evan P. Mullen, Bethel, Vt.; and his great-grandson, Noah A. Horn. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, William H. Bloomer, Jr. (wife, Patty), Binghamton; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth H. Patterson, Goodyear, Ariz., Betty Patterson, Broadview, Ohio, and Sarah J. Bloomer, Cambridge, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews. David graduated from Dartmouth College, Class of '44 and served as an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard, LST Pacific Theatre, during WW II. David began his career as a reporter and feature writer for the Evansville Press, then became Director of Marketing and Sales for Servel, Inc., both in Evansville, Ind. He and his young family moved in 1955 to Binghamton to join the family business of Binghamton Steel & Fabricating, Inc., where he became President. He later served as President of Sheltered Workshop for the Disabled, Inc.; Regional Director, Small Business Development Center, SUNY-Binghamton; and then Executive Director, Binghamton Summer Musical Festival, before fully retiring. David's business associations included Director, Southern Regional Economic Development Council; Director, Chase Lincoln First Bank, N. A.; President and Chairman, Associated Building Contractors of the Triple Cities; President, NYS Steel Fabricators Association; Director, American Institute of Steel Construction; Director, Broome County Chamber of Commerce. He was active in many community endeavors: Secretary, The Conrad and Virginia Klee Foundation; Vice President and Director, Tri-Cities Opera; Vice President and Director, Binghamton Summer Music Festival; Chairman and Director, Sheltered Workshop for the Disabled; Member, Broome County and Southern Tier East Regional Planning Boards. He enjoyed his memberships in the Binghamton City Club, Harpur Forum, the Putting Academy, Kannibal Klub, Livewire and R&A. David was very active in his church serving as Warden, Senior Warden and Fund Chairman at Trinity Memorial Episcopal Church. David thoroughly enjoyed life: sailing, hunting, horseback riding, tennis, summers at Cape Cod and Oteyokwa Lake, and autumn trips to Hanover, N.H. to see his cherished Dartmouth friends. His greatest joy has been his children and their families. All who knew David will remember him as a kind gentleman, devoted and loyal to his family and friends. The family extends grateful thanks to Dr. Francine Rainone, Lourdes Hospice and all his caregivers for their wonderful and compassionate care during his illness.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, November 1st, at Trinity Memorial Episcopal Church, 44 Main St., Binghamton, N.Y. Private burial will be at the convenience of the family. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m., Friday, October 31st, at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main St., Binghamton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Trinity Memorial Church.
