Edward Hamil Obituary

Hamil, Edward J.

Rotterdam: Edward J. Hamil, age 74, of Rotterdam, passed away on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at St. Peter's Hospice Inn. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward C. and Kathryn E. (Sheffer) Hamil, and his granddaughter, Heather Marie Hamil. He graduated from Ballston Spa High School, class of 1955. Ed is survived by his wife, Werdina Hamil, formerly of Endicott, NY; his son, Dennis (Karen E.) Cochardo of Endicott, NY; six daughters: Karen L. Cochardo of Endicott, NY, Shelle Hamil of Schenectady, Marie Boraski of Dalton, MA., Kathy Hamil of Schenectady, Maureen (Joseph) Savona of Endicott, NY, and Colleen (Garner) Ferris of Guilderland; nine grandchildren: Dennis Cochardo, Edward Cochardo, Lauren Cochardo, Matthew Cochardo, Tyler Boraski, Cameron Boraski, Joseph D. Savona, Michael Savona and Aaron Savona; 8 great-grandchildren; many dear cousins, nieces and nephews; and his sister, Elaine Pastore of Schenectady. Ed lived in Endicott, NY for many years, where he owned and operated his own contracting business, Edward J. Hamil, Inc. He built and remodeled many homes in the area, was a member of the Broome County Chamber of Commerce, and served as president of the Southern Tier Homebuilders Association. In 1986, Ed returned to Schenectady and later established his second business, Affordable Alterations, specializing in home remodeling and lead paint abatement. Ed embraced new experiences and encouraged his family to do the same. He loved to read, ski, and fish, was an excellent cook, and enjoyed trying new foods. Ed was very proud of his Irish heritage, and in 2006 he fulfilled his lifelong dream of visiting the Emerald Isle. His family will always cherish the wonderful stories he shared from his trip. Ed thoroughly enjoyed social gatherings with both his cousins and his classmates from Ballston Spa High School. Ed's family wishes to express their appreciation to the incredible team of nurses, aides, social workers and clergy members at St. Peter's Hospice Inn. We're grateful to you for your kindness and consideration during his last days. Memorial donations may be sent to The Community Hospice of Albany County, 315 South Manning Blvd, Albany, NY 12208. Ed loved his family and was incredibly generous. The light of his life was his daughter, Kathy. It was Ed's wish to give special recognition and financial support to the staff of Schenectady ARC, Life Prep 1, 136 State St., Schenectady, NY, 12305. They went above and beyond to accommodate the family throughout Ed's final days and Kathy has thrived tremendously since joining their great program. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that monetary donations be made in Ed's memory to either of these fine organizations. The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 5th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave., Schenectady, with funeral services immediately following. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens cemetery in Colonie.

Our hearts are filled with sorrow for Mr Hamil's family and friends. Colleen, I'll always remember the stories of the crazy concoctions he would come up with for your family's holiday dinners. He was definitely a unique man. I hope these memories and many more will make you smile in the days ahead.
