When I was 7, Mr Verwys's son Chris threw a baseball at my head during Vestal Junior Baseball League practice, I don't think I realized I was supposed to catch it. With my lip gushing I remember clearly Mr Verwys rushing over to help in his calm mild manner way he did things. Over the years me and Chris became best friends and I always remember Mr Verwys being there to take his turn hulling us kids around. It made me very sad to read that both Mr and Mrs Verwys died this year. George was a great man and when he "did" say something, he was the type of person you wanted to hear what he had to say. In 2009, when our family had 2 accidental deaths, I instantly recognized him in line at the wake. It's hard to describe the feeling in words, we chatted a bit, I was very happy to see him there. I came across this doing a internet search for Chris, you know, when you get bored and your in front of a computer. Being 52, moving around, meeting thousands of people, you realize how rare a person like Mr Verwys is in the world, it's too bad it takes that long to conclude this, and how much this world will miss a decent human being like George.

I have many great memories of George from work at IBM, one was a trip to Norfolk where he took me to a place for huge oysters on the half shell.

On behalf of the Core Crew, Partner Families, Staff and Board of Directors of Broome County Habitat for Humanity, I wish to extend our deepest condolences and love to your family. George was a dedicated, beloved and extraordinary volunteer for many years. We would not be the success we are today had George not been a part of our construction crew, inspiring others with his heart for the mission. The kindness that our "Donut Man" shared with all of us is what helped to make our regular construction team not just a volunteer group, but a family. When it came time for George to retire, he left a void that we are still working to fill. He is spoken of often, and will forever be part of our story. Thank you for asking people to remember Broome County Habitat for Humanity as they remember your father. We are very touched. On a personal note, your father was one of my first friends when I took the position of Executive Director. He gave me leadership advice that I carry with me all these years later. His words and his deeds were a gift. Blessings to you all. With love, Amy Winans and all of us at Broome County Habitat for Humanity
