Janice Holcomb Obituary

Janice E. "Jan" (Rosenzweig) Holcomb

Port Crane - Janice E. "Jan" Holcomb, 73 of Port Crane passed unexpectedly on Sun. Jan. 31, 2021 at her home. She is predeceased by her parents, Thelma and Fredrick Rosenzweig. She is survived by her devoted husband of 52 years, Gary; 2 daughters & sons-in-law, Deborah & Joseph Collesano, St. Louis, Missouri, Karen & Michael DeSantis, Endwell; 2 grandchildren that were the joy of her life, Gianna & Mariella; sister & brother-in-law, Carolyn & Roy Yarrington, Candor; sister-in-law, Cheryl & Mike Mammano, Port Crane; brother-in-law & sister-in-law, Terry & Catherine Holcomb, Santa Rosa, CA; aunt, Donna Fettinger and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews and cousins. Jan grew up on a farm in Port Crane with her family and a horse, chicken, pigs and geese who weren't always so nice. She graduated from Harpursville in 1965 and she enjoyed going to 5 Mile Point Racetrack- where she met the love of her life. Jan married her high school sweetheart and they began their adventure in Huston, TX. They settled in Port Crane and the adventure continued with raising two daughters. Jan loved being a stay at home mom while the girls were little, and later enjoyed her time as an Aide in Chenango Valley Elementary Schools. She was a long time board member of the Fenton Free Library and could always be found in the spring out front working in the garden. She was an avid gardener who had an amazing green thumb and her backyard was always a beautiful oasis. Her favorite hobby was quilting. She was an active member of the New Quilters on the Block Quilt Guild. Like all quilters, she always had many quilt projects in the works at all times. She was a special Gramma to her two granddaughters who love her so very much. She was always prepared to bake cookies, make applesauce and jelly, create gingerbread houses, or have a sleepover with pancakes for breakfast. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy and she was proud watching soccer games, dance recitals, concerts, and award ceremonies. Jan had a most caring heart and her joy was helping others in so many ways. She loved to bake pumpkin bread for bake sales and was always at the ready to help her friends and community. She was loved by all who knew her and will be dearly missed.

Private Funeral Services will be held at the Osterhoudt-Madden Funeral Home 69-71 Maple Street Harpursville at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fenton Free Library in her name at 1062 Chenango St. Binghamton NY 13901. Online condolences may be made at: www.omaddenfh.com.

Gary, Cheryl, Deb and Karen,
Words can not describe how much Jan has meant to me over the last 30 plus years. I am beyond shocked, saddened and without enough words of comfort to say to you and your families. She was like a part of our family.

I never saw Jan without a smile, not heard her laugh and she was one of the most genuine and giving people I’ve known. She had so many influences on me from bringing me a calendar every year for Christmas (we loved waiting for each month it changed on the new picture) , a love of snowmen ( several in my home came from her not to mention the idea to have them up all winter) and my flowers. I often got advice from her on what flowers work best in which planter and I found myself filling my planters each spring thinking I can’t wait for Jan to see them. We often showed up at the same place buying our flowers each spring without planning to. She was my official green thumb expert and I loved teasing her about dirt under her nails from “playing in the dirt”.

Also she was so generous of her time and I loved her passion for volunteering and giving back. She was a role model for my own volunteer efforts in our community including the Dicks Open.

I get to think of her often as my freezer always had a jar of her strawberry jelly or a loaf of pumpkin bread. I enjoyed the trips we took to Myrtle because of her generosity.

I was blessed to call her my friend and our whole family was touched in some way by her either holding and feeding the kids when they were babies, making a quilt, keeping an eye on them when she was at the school, keeping tabs on them as they went away for school.. she always wanted to know everything they did .. I will miss her and our stories immensely.

Sending you all some extra love and lifting you all up in prayer.

Gary and Family,
I am so sorry to hear this. I have the fondest memories of Jan when I was at Universal. Please accept my condolences at such a difficult time. May you find some solace in these, the most difficult days ahead in the fact that she was certainly loved by many, the true test of character.
