John Davidge Obituary

John Sherwood Davidge
of Binghamton
John Sherwood Davidge died May 26, 2008. Born January 13, 1934, the son of the late James Miller Davidge and Cornelia Jane Yetter Davidge, he is survived by his wife, Jean Lockwood Davidge; his daughter, Elizabeth Cornell Davidge LaMie (Jeffrey Lynn LaMie), Fremont, Calif.; his son, James MacLeod Davidge (Dr. Anna Windle Davidge); and grandson, Jonathon Windle Davidge, Larkspur, Calif.; his sister, Carolyn Sherwood Davidge Demtrak, (Dr. Christopher Starson Demtrak), Vestal, NY; nieces and nephews, several cousins; and his aunt, Marjorie Yetter Walls. He was educated in the Binghamton school system and graduated from Binghamton Central High School, where he was boys intersectional singles tennis champion in 1950. In 1955, he graduated from Cornell University and in 1958 received a degree from the Cornell Law School. While an undergraduate he was a member of Psi Upsilon fraternity, the Cornell Tennis Team, the Cornell Glee Club, on the staff of the Cornell Daily Sun and other organizations on campus. As an alumnus, he served as President of the Class of 1955. Mr. Davidge was a partner in the Binghamton law firm of Hinman, Howard and Kattell, a member of the New York State Bar Association and former Director of the Broome County Bar ssociation, as well as a member of the District Court of Northern New York. He was a former director of the Southern Tier Zoological Society, Broome County Family and Children's Society, the Binghamton Symphony, Broome County Young Republican's Club, the State Association of Young Republican Clubs of New York, where he served as a governor for the Sixth Judicial District. He was also a former President of the Cornell Club of the Southern Tier, a member of the Live Wire Club and the Binghamton Club. He had the honor, in 1964, of being the local chairman of Senator Kenneth B. Keating's campaign against Robert F. Kennedy for the New York State Senatorial race. Mr. Davidge was a member of the First Presbyterian Church choir, the Clef Club, The Motet Singers, Binghamton Symphony and Binghamton University Chorus as well as other local choral groups.
There will be no calling hours or funeral. A service of interment will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to The Cornell University Plantations, 1 Plantations Road, Ithaca, N.Y. 14850-2779; or the Broome County Library Foundation Reading Garden, 185 Court Street, Binghamton, N.Y. 13901. Funeral arrangements are provided by Parsons Funeral Home.
