Leonard Verrastro Obituary

Verrastro, Leonard G.

Leonard G. Verrastro passed away unexpectedly in his home November 27, 2013. Lenny is predeceased by his parents, Leonard Sr. and Antoinette Verrastro and is survived by his wife of 30 years, Deborah Verrastro; sons, Jason (DG) Verrastro, Rome Verrastro, and Evan Verrastro; and daughter, Cali Verrastro; his brothers, Canio (Kelly) Verrastro and Fran (Chrissi) Verrastro. He will be missed by many in-laws, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and friends. Lenny graduated from Johnson City High School in 1972. He began employment at Broome Tioga BOCES as a masonry teacher in 1985 and has been a devoted employee since. Lenny has had numerous national winners as SkillsUSA and has touched the lives of all of his students while being a role model to many. Lenny was the rock of his family and will be remembered as an incredible family man. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and will live on by many as the "King of Garlic." Lenny took pride in his role as the Commander in Chief of the Sons of The American Legion Post 1305. The family will receive friends at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main Street, Binghamton, on Sunday December 1, 2013, from 1-3 p.m. A memorial service to follow. Rev. Corey S. VanKuren will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to BOCES CTE Leadership/SkillsUSA, 435 Glenwood Road, Binghamton, NY 13905. A scholarship will be established in Lenny's name. "Gone but not forgotten, although we are apart. Your spirit lives within us, forever in our hearts."

Funny I was just thinking about Lenny and the time we came to visit, it was cold and snow was everywhere. Lenny fixed dinner on the grill, he marinated some venison for three days as I recall and served it with a baked potato and a salad. I still remember how delicious that dinner was. We miss you Lenny but we know you are free now.

to the Verrastro family,
I was so saddened to hear about Lenny. It brought back many memories from BOCES. He was a wonderful caring father...I remember many "chats" we would have to keep you on the right track, and he worked so hard to impart his strong work ethic to you boys.
I also have fond memories of Lenny as he worked with his students both in the classroom and at VICA. No teacher worked more tirelessly to help his students achieve success. He was a master teacher in every sense.
And, of course, I can never think of Lenny without thinking of those garlic greens he brought to school.
He was a generous, caring, sincere man...and I am so sorry for your loss.

December 5, 2013

Dear Deb, Cali, Evan and Rome and family:

We are all so shocked and deeply saddened about Lenny's passing. God called him home way too soon. We have to stick together and hold each other close now because that is what Lenny would want. We are all going to miss him terribly. He was a caring and loving husband, the greatest and best dad, and a true genuine friend that we could ever have. His kindness, smiling face and heart of gold will be carried with all of us in our hearts....Until that glorious day when we meet again. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. We love you always.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Dear Verrastro family,

I worked with Lenny at BOCES for several years, and while I didn't know him well I worked very closely with many of his students. I want you to know how deeply he touched the lives of the alternative education students he taught. Many of those kids only came to school so that they could do the meaningful work Lenny asked them to do. He had high expectations of them and they always felt challenged and proud of themselves after spending time with him. I know that he will be remembered as someone who took his students seriously and helped them to find their identities. I am sorry for your loss.

November 30, 2013

I think that anything I could possibly say is so inadequate as to the depth of your pain and sorrow you and your family must be feeling at this moment. Please believe that Lenny will always be with you. You'll see him in the first Robin that you see in the spring time, or in the last leaf that has fallen from the tree. You know that when you feel the warmth of the sun on your face, and that the gentle kiss you felt on your cheek was really him. Telling you that he's never left your side, but has actually carried you through this, with all the love he's had for you all this time. Please accept my deepest sympathy for you and your families loss. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
