Mary Diegert Obituary

Mary Anna (Wagner) Diegert

Vestal - Mary Anna (Wagner) Diegert, 91, of Vestal, NY died Monday June 28, 2021. She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Melvin and her grandson Evan. She is survived by her sister Carlyn Johnson, Indianapolis IN; two sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Kathleen (Vickers) Diegert, Albuquerque, NM, and Douglas and Mary (Shook) Diegert, Vestal; three grandsons, Kurt, Joel and Paul Diegert; two great-grandchildren Dahlia and Remy Diegert; niece Sarah Johnson, and nephew Paul Johnson.

Mary was born in 1929 in Trenton, NJ and grew up in nearby White Horse. She showed early aptitude for math and science and attended Cornell University, where she earned a degree in Electrical Engineering, the only woman in her class. After marrying Melvin and starting her family, she received a Masters degree in Mathematics from SUNY Binghamton, and joined the faculty at SUNY Broome (then called Broome Tech).

She was professor of Mathematics and Computer Studies at Broome Tech. She served there for 21 years, as chairman of the Mathematics department, founded the Computer Studies department, and served as Vice President for Academic Affairs.

She was active in the League of Women Voters, and a member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Binghamton. She loved growing and arranging flowers and feeding the birds. She maintained an intense interest in particle physics, genetics and molecular biology, and other sciences to the end of her life.

A memorial service is tentatively planned for 1 PM, October 2 at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Binghamton.

Expressions of sympathy in her memory can be made to the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Binghamton or to SUNY Broome Community College. Arrangements are by Coleman & Daniels 300 E. Main St, Endicott NY 13760.

I remember Mary well from my early years at Broome Community College, where our offices were in the same suite in Titchener. I admired Mary for her pioneering achievements as a woman engineer and as chair of the Computer Science Department. She was a great asset to the college. But, most of all, I remember her friendliness, cheerfulness and outside interests, especially music. The last time I saw her, when she was in her 80s, she said she was studying particle physics or some other challenging branch of modern physics. She was an inspiration!

Thank you Mary Ann Diegert for your contribution to education! First woman in Electrical Engineering at Cornell University is amazing! I attended "Broome Tech" now called SUNY Broome and was in the Computer Studies program. Thank you so much for founding that department! To your family, prayers for all of you as you have lost someone so special. May all those beautiful memories flood your minds each and every day!
