Sandra Karcher Obituary

Karcher, Sandra

(nee Clark)

Mrs. Sandra Karcher (née Clark), 76, passed away surrounded by her loving husband, children and grandchildren on Friday, December 5, 2014. She was born on March 18, 1938 in Deposit, NY to the late Elton Clark and Gertrude Blake Clark. Sandra was a graduate of Hancock Central School Class of 1955, Binghamton City Hospital School of Nursing Class of 1958, and State University of New York Oneonta, Class of 1982. She was married to S. Vaughn Karcher of Scott Center, PA on November 7, 1959 at the Hancock Baptist Church. Sandra was a lifelong resident of the Village of Hancock where she and her husband raised three children. She was a Registered Nurse at Read Memorial Hospital, and School Nurse-Teacher at Hancock Central Schools where she retired in 1995 after 30 years of service. Sandra was passionate both about her career and her village, serving as President of the Hancock Teachers Association, Mayor of the Village of Hancock, and President of the Hancock Area Chamber of Commerce at different times throughout the years. She will be remembered by so many for her caring ways that extended through and beyond the halls of Hancock Central into her community, helping friends, neighbors and students in time of need and crisis. In her spare time, Sandra was an avid collector of antiques, first as co-owner "Cellar Door Antiques" with her mother, then as owner of "Karcher's Kountry Kottage Antiques" and "Leonard Hill House Bed and Breakfast" following her retirement. Sandra's living legacy is her grandchildren of whom she was most proud, loved and adored. Sandra is survived by her husband, Vaughn Karcher of Hancock, NY; three children Mary Karcher-Redzich of Binghamton NY, Sherry (Greg) Karcher-Hewitt of Rotterdam, NY, and Vaughn C. (Melissa) Karcher, also of Hancock, 6 grandchildren: Trudy and Maeve Redzich, Binghamton, Maire Grace and Andrew Hewitt, Rotterdam, and Mason and Brennan Karcher, also of Hancock. She is further survived by sister-in-law, RuthAnn (Karcher) Geer and brother-in-law, Ron Karcher, both of Orlando, FL, as well as her helpful friend, Joan Pritchard, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother, Gertrude Clark in 1993 and by close family friend, Andrew T. Bane in 1988. Calling hours will be held Friday, December 12th, from 5-8 p.m. and Funeral Services will be held Saturday, December 13th, at 11:00 a.m. at the Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel, Hancock. Following interment in Hale Eddy Cemetery, a luncheon will be held at the Hancock Firemen's Clubhouse, Hancock. All are welcome to attend in celebration of Sandra's life. Mary, Sherry and Greg, Vaughn, Vaughn and Melissa, Trudy, Maeve, Maire Grace, Mason, and Brennan- My deepest condolences in the loss of your mother, wife, grandmother. Sandra certainly loved you all! I remember being with her and Mary one time and hearing her say to Mary "I love your father, dearly." Your 50th Anniversary Party was a wonderful tribute by friends and family, alike, Vaughn. May the memories of happy times, special occasions, and vacations help you at this time and in the future. I know she is with Gert, now, and I know that she will be watching over you all.

We often say; "may memories comfort you"; but in this case it is not a cliche.

I remember my first year on the school board when Sandra and the teachers association picketed my office, with my 5th grade teacher, Ella McGranaghan, holding a sign saying that I was "unfair". By the time Sandra was done "explaining" it to me, I think I was convinced.

I look amongst my mementos and see a "Karcher for Mayor" button and I remember Sandra's dedication to public service. Sandra at the Village Democratic Caucus never ever wanted to run for anything; but fortunately we were able to convince her that she was needed.

I was archiving my emails and saw some pleas for help to get her Mac working again. Sandra and I would ponder the meaning of computer manuals and printer instructions. I remember leaving with "payment" in the form of home made goodies from her garden.

As I look out my door and see the new medical clinic, I remember all of the hard work Sandra put in to meet the public health care needs of the community.

We shall all miss Sandra's dedication, hard work, and wisdom.

May our memories comfort you.
