David Hendrix Obituary

Passed away peacefully at his Petaluma home on June 20, 2011. Survived by his sons, Gregory and Dustin Hendrix; granddaughter Kayla Hendrix; sister Judy Nunes (Ernie); nephew, Michael Turner (Adrienne); nieces, Amy Luiz (Eric), Karen Hermsmyer (Marc), great nephews, Cole and Braiden Turner, Tyler Hermsmyer, and great nieces, Hannah and Ava Luiz. Preceding him in death were his parents, Richard and Marjorie Hendrix and his loving nephew Brian David Turner. Buffalo Dave was born, reared and educated in Petaluma, graduating from PHS in 1967. He worked for PG&E, Mare Island Naval Shipyard and worked his last 23 years for the City of Petaluma Public Works and Maintenance Dept. Dave was to retire on June 24, 2011. For years he cut and sold firewood around the Sonoma County area. He always seemed the happiest when he was able to cut wood. He loved his three Great Danes and created a bond with them as best friends. Dave enjoyed working for the City of Petaluma as it gave him an opportunity to make a friend out of a stranger every day; Judy called him "Mr. Petaluma". A Visitation will be held on Monday, June 27, 2011 from 2:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. with a Celebration of Life at 6:00 p.m. at PARENT-SORENSEN MORTUARY & CREMATORY, 850 Keokuk St., Petaluma. Memorial contributions may be made to Lucille Packard Children's Hospital, 400 Hamilton Ave., Suite 340, Stanford CA, 94301 or to your favorite charity.

We lived next door to the Hendrix family for many years growing up with David and Judy. David always had a smile, and just loved his hugs. He was so caring, and is truly missed. God's blessings, David.

Buffalo made Paul Bunyan seem like a Nerf football! Buffalo was built like a massive oak tree who had the hand shake that could make your hand feel like you slammed it in a car door. Buff was a big part of my everyday, We talked very often and Buffalo was definitely one of the funniest people with I've ever met. I worked with Buffalo and work with out Buffalo sure is not the same because he had more personality then all of us put together! I have a great amount of memories and HILARIOUS sayings & stories from ''THE BUFF'' that I will always keep alive and bring with me into my future. If anyone needs any pictures of Buffalo I have plenty of good ones on my computer just E-mail me and I will be happy to send you Buffalo pictures for your keepsakes. Thank you Buffalo for all the awesome memories and you were absolutely like family to me and you still are!

I met Buffalo Dave when I worked with his sister Judy. From the moment I met him he made you feel like family. With his warm infectious smile to his great sense of humor. I hadn't seen Dave in a long time & was very saddened to read that he had passed. My heart & love goes out to his family. Petaluma will now have one less icon. Rest In Peace Buffalo Dave, you will be missed.

I came to know David as Buffalo he lived across the street from a client of mine (Barbara B.) My sons and I would see him around town and he would aways have a smile on his face. We had just seen him at the irrigation store on friday the 17th and I ask him still working? And of course he replied ya til next week. He had told me and my sons that he was so looking forward to fixing up his front yard and cutting up wood............He will be missed.....Lanamarie and Sons

Dave was a gentle man who always had a smile and a minute to say hello, and always stopped to lend a hand when help was needed. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and worked with him at the City of Petaluma. My deepest condolences to all his family.

Buffalo came into my life almost 20 years ago when i was a seasonal temp for the city of Petalume. Almost instantly he was like family. And though we only worked together for a couple years our friendship only grew. Time took us on different paths but through the years it hasn't been hard to make them cross. If you spend more that 4 Hours in Petaluma you were sure to run into him. Pretty sure Dave was the only man i knew that greeted me with " HAY BABE, LOOKIN GOOD!!! and l love him for that.... One of the most genuin people i have had the pleaseure to know. True salt of the earth..Rest in peace my friend you will be missed.. LOVE YA BABE..

I'm so shocked to hear of Buffalo Dave's passing. My dad and "Buffie" were riding/driving partners while they worked at Mare Island. Then several years later, he came back into my life. My kids, Savannah and Colby called him "Santa" when they were real young. He was a very loving, caring man. When I was going though a hard time, Buffie would stop by or call to check on me and my kids. I later intoduced him to my BF, and they clicked. They talked about trees, cars, making jerky and Dave loved telling Buddy stories about his tree jobs. Some mornings we'd wake up to Buffie's AWESOME jerky on our porch. Buffalo Dave has always been a special man to us. He'll be FOREVER MISSED. Our hearts go out to his sister, his children and the rest of his family! Buddy, BB, Savannah, Colby and Kayla

I have known Dave for over 40 years, I bought firewood from him for the last 25 years and worked with him for the last 23 years. I remember Dave telling me at his job interview he was an "excellent welder". So I thought alright we could use an excellent welder. The first time I went with Dave to do some welding, he started a fire on the shoulder of Highway 101 . Good thing the fire dept was close by. The second time I had the pleasure to assist Dave in his "excellent" skills as a welder, he started the field on fire behind a local supermarket. This time I was prepared, I brought a fire extinguisher. Dave had this contagious gift about him, it seems everytime you were near him you broke out into a smile, laughter and even felt a warming of the heart. "What a great gift to have". I thank you Dave for 40 years of that gift you gave to me. "I will miss you my friend but I will never forget you".
Your friend always,

Like so many other who were drawn to Dave by his unique charm and character, I am deeply grieved and bewildered by his unexpected death. Dave and I worked together for the City of Petaluma, and a day didn't go by that he didn't make me chuckle or laugh. He was an easy going kind of guy; happy to care for his mom whom he adored, and his dogs. I will always remember Dave and feel very fortunate to have known him. Rest in Peace My Friend!
