Edward Poe Obituary

Edward A. Poe
Passed away peacefully on March 15, 2019, at the age of 92, at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with family present. Ed was born in the Berryessa Valley to a pioneer ranch family. Ed would often say he "was born at the bottom of Lake Berryessa", where the town of Monticello used to be. He later moved to Ft. Bragg, where he attended junior and senior high schools.
Ed was a World War II Navy combat veteran in the Pacific campaigns, piloting a Higgins boat during the Iwo Jima combat landing. He came home after the war to resume his California Division of Forestry career, becoming an Assistant State Forest Ranger. Ed retired as the District Ranger for the Sonoma County coast, where he was considered an expert in wildland firefighting.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife Lorraine and daughter Susan, sister Cecilia, and brother George. He is survived by son George (Donna), granddaughter Stephanie (Montana) Carter, brother-in-law Albert Mello Sr., sister-in-law Barbara Diekmann, godson Chris Glavich, honorary son Jack Piccinini (Jenifer), caregiver Luisa (Manoa) Mataindilo, and numerous other family members and close friends.
Services to be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 23, 2019, at Santa Rosa Methodist Church, 1551 Montgomery Drive, Santa Rosa, California.

Ed Poe, (aka "1411") hired me as the Mt. Jackson lookout in the summer of 1980 to partner with the legendary Maggie Loundagin. I am forever grateful to Ed, as it was the best job I've ever had. Ed was kind, caring and a 100% wonderful man. He will live on in our memories and also in our hearts. Signing out from Mt. Jax KMB237

My sincere, heartfelt condolences to all who knew this fine gentleman.
I worked with Ed in the early '90's. Actually, Ed trained me to be 'The Other Lookout', working with Dick Bower, up at Pole Mountain Lookout. My first season, if I wasn't working my shift at the lookout, I was driving around Sonoma, Mendocino, Lake, Napa, and Solano Counties with Ed introducing me to Everyone! Ed had a story for everywhere we drove and everyone we met. When we stopped for lunch, Ed would use that time to talk about his lovely wife Lorraine and accomplishments of his family. Ms Lorraine made me a lunch every single day I rode with Ed. Always included a chocolate pudding cup. I felt so special.
Not only did this kindhearted man teach me to be a Firefighter/Lookout, Ed taught me about Community Service, how to be a better person, how to craft a story, and to smile. I never saw Ed without a smile on his face, a gift given from his heart. Thank you my friend for the tremendous positive contribution you made to my life. Happy Trails . . .

George,
Our deepest condolences for the loss of your father, Ed. Our families were life long friends. I remember visiting often while growing up when your family lived in Laytonville. Your father was especially kind to our son when he was interested in pursuing a career with CDF. That kindness will always be remembered.

So long Ed...see if you can find me a good assignment up there. Something that requires lots of firing like we did on the Miller Fire. I appreciated your comment later that you had always wanted to do that.Rest easy Old Ranger. .Scott DrewLNU Retired
