John LeBARON Obituary

Died February 19 in Santa Rosa, Calif. John was a fourth-generation Sonoma County resident, born to C.A. "Art" and Annie Johnson LeBaron of Valley Ford. His paternal grandfather, Harrison Melvin LeBaron, came to Sonoma County from Eastern Canada in 1875 and his maternal grandparents; Thomas and Hannah Murray came to Bodega in the early 1850s, from England and Ireland, respectively. John grew up in Valley Ford, hiking the coastal hills and valleys, which would later become subjects for his work. He was a graduate of American Valley Grammar School, Tomales High School, Santa Rosa Junior College and, much later, earned his bachelor's degree from Sonoma State University. He was a prize-winning photojournalist who spent 20 years as a Press Democrat photographer, a photography teacher for 35 years in the art department at SRJC, and a fine arts photographer whose work was shown in galleries and exhibits throughout Northern California. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Gaye LeBaron, Santa Rosa; his daughter, Suzanne LeBaron, Oakland; his son, Anthony LeBaron, Santa Rosa, and his grandson, Trenton LeBaron Potter, Oakland. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Santa Rosa. He served in the California National Guard. He was a past member of the National Press Photographers' Association, the Sonoma County Press Club and the Empire Runners. A Memorial Service will be held in early Spring, on a date to be announced, at Santa Rosa Junior College's Emeritus Hall. Memorial gifts in his honor may be made to the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 522, MS#3R02, Santa Rosa, CA 95402-9964, or to the LeBaron Photography Scholarship Fund at Santa Rosa Junior College Foundation, 1501 Mendocino Avenue, Santa Rosa, CA 95401. Gaye, Suzi, Tony, Trent I felt as if I was part of the story. Your story, but in reality I have been an observer all the while of John and Gaye. What I noticed was a coupling of two generous spirits who breathed life into a community, a place, a physical presence John and Gaye graciously and seemingly effortlessly allowed us all old, older and oldest to observe, drink in and relish. Truly a Sonoma County treasure, our chosen spot. Thank you Gaye for sharing your husband with so many. Suzi, Tony and Trent I can feel, sense, John's energy in you. "There is no gold in California..." The young man from Valley Ford will remain forever in this chosen spot.

Gaye, I was saddened when I first learned of John's death. My heart goes out to you as I know he was an adored husband and companion in so many of your endeavors. The two of you made a huge impact for many years on those of us blessed to live in Sonoma County. It is a legacy you can look on with great pride. Know I'm praying for you, Suzi and Trent as you begin to live in a new reality. Much love, Sharon

I studied under John back in the mid 70s, and remember him fondly and well. I finished photo studies in San Francisco and have been a photographer since, but always remember John as a kind and supportive mentor. What a long and fine life he had!

After I retired from medicine I looked around for what to do next and found SRJC photo classes and John LeBaron. He was such a kind teacher. During a critique of student's work he never belittled or humiliated them, and he saw some pretty bad stuff. The most he ever said was "Tell us why you took this picture?"which really meant "Why in the world did you take this picture?"

Dear friend John, so many good times on the road, around the dinner table and savoring the bounty of Northern California with you. I loved to make you laugh. I loved for you to make my martinis. You can never be replaced and I will cherish you, the memories and your art. I will keep an eye on Gaye for you, as so many who love you both will do! With enduring love . . .

A kind and gentle man, John was an excellent teacher who helped and inspired me in many ways during my time at Unruh's and SRJC. He facilitated my hiring as a lab assistant in the old and new photo labs, which gave me a lot of confidence and a creative outlet when I really needed it. It was also inspiring to see a person of his age running in Annadel and Howarth parks when I was running cross-country with the Montgomery High team. Thanks to him and our coach, I've been running well into my years beyond school. Best wishes for strength to Gaye and the rest of the family. John's soul made the world a better place.
