John Vander Vennet Obituary

John George Vander Vennet
September 18, 1946 - July 17, 2025
John George Vander Vennet was born on September 18, 1946, in Moline, Illinois, to George and Eleanor Vander Vennet. When John was just two years old, the family, including his beloved sister, JoAnn ("Jojo"), relocated to Anniston, Alabama. In 1959, they moved again to Birmingham before eventually settling in Stockton, California, following a job transfer with Case Tractors.
John attended St. Mary's High School in Stockton, where he proudly lettered in both basketball and football. After high school, he attended the University of San Francisco and earned a bachelor's degree in history. He then served in the Army Reserves, working as an X-ray technician at Letterman Army Hospital.
Upon returning from the reserves, John began what would become a lifelong calling when he joined the San Francisco Fire Department. Over his 30-year career with SFFD, John built lasting friendships and thrived within the camaraderie and brotherhood of the fire service. He saved numerous lives over the course of his career, including working tirelessly for days on end through the aftermath of the Loma Prieta earthquake while stationed at the Presidio. He retired as a lieutenant in 2004.
In 1977, John married fellow USF alum Kathleen (Kathy) Deming. Kathy was his cherished partner in all aspects of life, and he loved her deeply. The couple initially settled in Novato, California, where they welcomed their son, Timothy ("Tim"). In 1979, they moved to the F Section of Rohnert Park and celebrated the arrival of their daughter, Amy.
John's greatest accomplishments were his children. From the very beginning, Tim and Amy brought him unimaginable joy. He was a devoted and loving father, fiercely proud of who they were and how they lived their lives.
John was a natural coach, a wonderful neighbor, a loyal friend, and a dedicated firefighter. Known for his humor, easygoing nature, and deep love of Lake Tahoe, John's legacy is one of joy, humility, and service. He was a faithful fan of the San Francisco 49ers and Giants, cheering them on with heart and spirit.
John passed away peacefully on July 17, 2025, surrounded by his family, due to complications from heart surgery. Above all, John cherished his role as "Papa" to his four adored grandchildren-Edin Quinn, Asher Timothy, Ansel John, and Miles Bennett ("Milo"). He was endlessly proud of their accomplishments and especially loved watching them play golf.
John is survived by his wife of 48 years, Kathy; his son, Tim, and daughter-in-law Julia, their children Edin and Asher. Also survived by his daughter Amy Walker, son-in-law Rob, and their children Ansel and Milo. He is also survived by his sister, JoAnn, as well as many cherished cousins, extended family members, and lifelong friends. John's warmth, wit, and unwavering love for his family and friends will be deeply missed and forever remembered
Services honoring John's life will be held on his birthday, September 18, 2025, at Holy Spirit Church in Santa Rosa, California. A reception will follow at Oakmont Golf Club. Service times will be confirmed at a later date.

V2 was a coworker, foursome member in both SFFD golf leagues, and a friend. He was laid back, funny, and generous. He shared his cozy Tahoma cabin with the members of Engine 36 for some legendary ski trips that provided some wonderful memories, laughs, and stories that are repeated to this day. Our apres-ski festivities would begin in Tahoe City and often times culminate at The Gold Spike in Tahoma, where we would wish the bartender a fond good evening as he was locking the door behind us. John was indeed a gentle man. I can't recall him ever swearing. I feel lucky to have worked with him, played with him, and observe over the years what a loving husband he was to Kathy, and a loving father to his children and grand children. It would be hard to find a better role model. I'll think of him often when I'm on the fairways or the slopes. Vaya con Dios John.

John was always a gentleman, he always had a smile, and he always had a good word for his friends and workmates. But most of all John was a good fireman.

I FIRST met Double V in the SFFD at Engine 36. Lots of great firefighters and officers there. John was one of my favorites. Low key and friendly, he did his job well while spreading laughter inside the firehouse. Very competent while working at fires and Haz Mat scenes. Double V will be missed.
RIP, Brother

V-2 was Batt 2 operator when I was with the Arson Unit stationed in the same firehouse (E-36) in the 1980's. John always wore a smile with a most pleasant personality. We both had cabin's on Tahoe's west shore at the time so would run into him up there as well. An all-around nice person. Condolences to the family.

I´m going to miss you; a great friend for over 60 years. Lot´s of good memories with you and Kathy.
Our trips to New Zealand, golf at Carnoustie, pubs in Ireland and of course your visits to La Quinta where we volunteered at the AMEX golf tournament. Your St. Mary´s team almost beat us in 1963. Great game! We will always be thinking of you and just remember we beat the girls in dominos partner. You will be dearly missed by Sayonna and I.
