Johnny YU Obituary

YU, Johnny Johnny began his next adventure on December 11, 2015 at the age of 67. Born in a chicken coop in rural China on July 26, 1948, Johnny immigrated with his parents and six siblings to Northern California in 1967. He chose his American name because "Johnny" always got the girls and the fast cars in American songs and movies. He worked as a waiter, carpenter, butcher, and car detailer to put himself through the SRJC, where he met his wife, Benita. He received his bachelor's degree in accounting from SJSU and had a successful career as an administrator for the Sonoma County Department of Public Works. Johnny lived the American dream every day. He loved his family, his wide circle of friends, driving muscle cars, working on his yard, and dancing. He had a giant personality, could talk to anyone about anything, and enjoyed giving excellent financial and life advice. Johnny loved to travel, spending much of his vacation time and retirement exploring other countries or road tripping through national parks. Many of his best times were spent outdoors with friends and family backpacking, fishing, and kayaking. He is survived by his wife, Benita; his children, Mindy and Michael; grandson, Kai; and a huge extended family who will miss his unique personality, unforgettable Johnny-isms, and unparalleled passion for life. Friends and family are welcome to join Johnny's celebration of life on January 23, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at the Enmanji Buddhist Temple, Sebastopol. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made towards a Sonoma County Regional Park memorial bench through the link: www.gofundme.com/johnnysbench.

Johnny, you will be missed greatly. You were a great friend, brother in law, father, uncle, husband and so much more. You showed me your love for the outdoors and for backpacking. I had so many great hiking trips with you and each one is a treasured memory. I will never get that cry of the rooster breaking the silence of any our our camp sights. By watching you I learned how to be a better father, you raised two great kids. Your personality was bigger than life. Watching you enjoying life with little inhibition was great. Always with great advice on any topic. I loved how we would kid you about your story telling being in "real time", I'd give anything to have you tell one more story for us. I don't know why your time hear was cut short, for what reason, there are somethings we just will not know. All I can say is God is laughing a bit more these days as you continue to practice your humor in heaven. You fought a tough battle, the best part was that you were able to have some quality time with your grandchild Kai. I only hope he will retain memories of his YeYe, I know he will have enough pictures that's for sure.

Can't say how much we will all miss you my friend.

We were fortunate enough to have Johnny as our next door neighbor for the past 6 1/2 years. He (and Benita) are our all time favorite neighbors. We will miss the random mailbox conversations and amazing perspective that Johnny had on life. His personality was enormous compared to his stature. We are already missing him dearly.

Benita & family we have been blessed to have know Johnny for a long time, clean back to the Hof Brau on Cleveland Ave.. I remember him having a Dodge Charger and Jan Fiske, a co- worker, would run out to his car shake the door handle and would set off the car alarm. His reaction was always classic and with a wide grin. He always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. Our thoughts are with you. He will be truly be missed.

Benita, I am so sorry to hear about Johnny. He was a wonderful, fun-loving, caring person. I feel certain that he and Ron will have a great time hiking and visiting. He was a super cook, also. Please let me know if I can help you in any way.

Yu Family: I worked with Johnny at County Government for many years. He was just a joy. The year he dressed up as a woman for Halloween was the best. My sorrow for your loss.

I worked with Johnny at Public Works for many years. He would always be the one singing the loudest at a fellow employee's birthday celebration and dancing with the most enthusiasm at weddings or parties. He gave me some excellent financial advice that I am still benefitting from today and I always enjoyed his slide presentations of his world travels. My sincere condolences go out to his family and his many friends. Rest in eternal peace Johnny.

Bonita, Mindy, Michael. Words cannot express my sorrow at Johnny's passing. I will cherish his friendship for the rest of my life. His Johnny-ism's are truly what I enjoyed the most. He was able to make me think outside my comfort zone. I will think of him often knowing he was a positive influence on me.
