Peter MENTH Obituary

MENTH, Peter Clement Peter Clement Menth, 90, of Windsor, CA, passed away at home on October 2, 2016, while surrounded by family. Born April 1, 1926, in Hartford, SD, to Hazel and Lawrence Menth, he lived most of his adult life in Northern California. It was the Depression and promise that brought Peter and his family to California. Upon graduation from high school, Peter enlisted in the Navy. He served his country in the South Pacific during the Second World War. He was a Seabee, and for a time stationed on Okinawa and later part of the occupation force in Japan. He spoke little of his service, as many of the Greatest Generation are prone to do. He also served in the Korean War aboard the USS Princeton, Aircraft Carrier, CV-37, "Every Man Is A Tiger." His family remains extremely proud of his service to country. Peter was a man devoted to wife and family. His love Mary was his focus in life. Married for nearly 64 years, Peter had an unwavering commitment to her and their life together. Indeed, "Peter Loves Mary" was a family saying for many, many years. Together they created a family of eight children, and anyone else who sat down at the dinner table. He presided over many family reunions at MOBHILL, and never ceased to instill and reinforce love of family in all of us. Peter was a teacher at heart and profession. His start in Santa Rosa was at Santa Rosa Junior High School, where he taught math. Later he moved to Santa Rosa High School, where for over 25 years he taught the biological sciences. His class room was a constant buzz of activity, experiment and learning. He was a natural. In retirement, Peter was the volunteer extraordinaire: church social hour, the "Snoopy Museum" and the Museum Information Booth at the airport were but a few of his volunteer efforts for the community. Peter is survived by his wife, Mary; son, Lawrence; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth (Liz); granddaughter, Megan (James) Thorall; great-granddaughter, Holly; grandson, Timothy (Nicole); great-grandchildren, Emma, Ella and Evelyn; grandson, Nathan (Christina); great-grandchildren, Oliver and Delanie; daughter, Mary Beth; son-in-law, Dag, grandchildren, Marika and Marius; daughter, Monica Schupbach; son-in-law, Leonard; grandson, Ryan; granddaughter, Casie (Chris) Haye; great-grandchildren, Sophia and Travis; daughter, Martha Menth; son-in-law, Don Dominguez; son, Peter; daughter-in-law, Paula; grandchildren, Hanna, Cole, John Paul and Peter James; son, Paul; daughter-in-law, Kerry; son, John; daughter-in-law, Annette; grandchildren, Christina, Gaetan, Julian and Lionel; and step-grandchildren, Kelina and Devin Harper. Preceded in death by son, Joseph (may he rest in peace). A mass of celebration and remembrance for Peter will be held on Saturday, October 15, at 12:30 p.m. at Guadalupe Catholic Church, 8400 Old Redwood Hwy, Windsor. Reception immediately following at the church's Furth Center next door. Interment will be private. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph's Health Hospice, Santa Rosa.

For me, as a young teacher at Santa Rosa High, where I wanted to innovate in the teaching of Physics, Pete was the perfect mentor, always positive and supportive. He will never be forgotten by all the people he helped along the way. Richard Smith

To every single one of the Menth family, I send you my love & gratitude for being such a strong comforting influence in my child & young adulthood. I am so sad & sorry to hear of the passing of Peter. My memories of he & Mary, the house on the hill, & all the goings on there that you let me be a part of...I will always treasure & hold dear. You provided great support to my mother, Betty, & I after we lost my dad, Mike Begley, in 1974 (by letting her drop me there with you on weekends so I could get a taste of family life & she some free time, as well as lonely Sunday visits from the two of us...but what a fright, her gunning our chevy truck & camper up that steep rutted driveway to your house!). I also remember those masses in your front yard...the Spencers & the Bubbs & Virgin of Guadalupe Church & the Christian Family Movement. My dad was also a teacher & close friends with Peter. I have so so many memories & such a forlorn fondness for those times gone by. Peter, I wish I had gotten a chance to visit with you, & Mary over these decades past. I've had & am having mental/physical health problems that prevent me from doing or having done so. Now I know, Peter, that you are at rest in Heaven with my dad, & your lost son, Joe. Mary, I am praying that your heart be filled with solace to soothe the pain, & that you may all find respite & strength in one another. Mary, thank you too for being such a wonderful mothering influence for me, teaching me to bake a wacky cake, lol & the kids for playing with me! And for Martha & John's friendship especially. Love & condolences to all of you as you go through one of life's major transitions. My mom is in a care home with dementia, 91 & going strong. Breaks my heart. Rest In Peace dear Peter, you left the world & better place & your legacy will live on through the students you influenced, your charitable actions, your family: wife Mary, children Lawrence, Marybeth, Monica, Martha, (Joseph), Peter, Paul, John & all their progeny.

Peter was my mentor teacher at Santa Rosa High School from 1968-1970. We shared a history of service in the U.S. Navy. As was his penchant, he kindly shepherded me through the trials of a young and inexperienced teacher. He even forgave me when one of my physics students broke out the side of his huge salt water tank, sending gallons of salt water and sea life careening across the classroom and into the hallway. I remember him fondly and with great admiration and respect. C. Richard (Dick) Smith, Kelseyville, CA

Mr. Menth taught me biology at SRHS and was an influence in my life. He taught me that good grades came from working hard and not from reputation. Enjoy Heaven.

Dearest Mary and family, I am so very sorry to hear of your huge loss. I have wonderful memories of you all (seemed like so many Menths! :)) gathered around your table for pancake breakfasts with the Spencers and the Bubbs after home church. You and Peter showed such love for each other. You built a beautiful family! Heartfelt condolences to you all.

I remember Mr. Menth very well. He was one of my teachers at SR Junior High.I really didn't like math but he got me through it. I remember him as very kind man and always explained everything so you understood it. He was one of my favorite teachers. My condolences to the family.
