Francis O'Doherty Obituary

O'DOHERTY, FRANCIS XAVIER On May 22, 2005, Francis Xavier O'Doherty of Temecula, CA., died after a long illness. Ready to move to rest and peace, his great regret was leaving Ann, his first love, greatest champion and wife of more than 58 years. Born on November 17, 1924 in Philadelphia, PA., Mr. O'Doherty remembered a Huck Finn youth among the streetcars and eccentricities in Baltimore, MD. Over-riding the resistance of his Irish parents, Edwin and Patricia Kathleen, Mr. O'Doherty enlisted in the Navy at the tender age of seventeen at the outbreak of World War II. He served with pride on one of the most decorated destroyers, the U.S.S. Radford, for the duration. Upon graduating from the University of Baltimore with a law degree, he obtained his naval commission and first assignment in naval counter-intelligence. He had a long career of service to the government and "adjunct" industry. As a resident of Temecula for ten years, Mr. O'Doherty was active in St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church, a loving parish which nurtured both his spirituality and social spirit. He was a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus. Mr. O'Doherty is survived by his sister, Gemma Allen and brother, Gabriel O'Doherty, both of Baltimore, MD. He is pre-deceased by his brother Patrick O'Doherty and sister, Regina Martin. Mr. O'Doherty's great pride focused on his children: Kathleen Ann O'Doherty of Florida, Therese Maureen O'Doherty of Connecticut, F.X. Sean O'Doherty of California, Mary Eileen Kreutner, who pre-deceased him, and Moira Colleen O'Doherty of Maryland. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Sean, Justin, Sara, William and Michael. Calling hours will be held at Stout Funeral Home, 27135 Madison Avenue, Temecula on Thursday, May 26 starting at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 27 at St. Catherine of Alexandria in Temecula. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the St. Catherine of Alexandria building fund.
