I met Paula when she hired me as a Rural Carrier at the Winchester Post Office in California. She inspired me to be a Postmaster, and helped me learn everything I could about my job. I became a clerk, then Postmaster later on, but from the moment we met we became friends, not just with her but with Ken (others may call him Keith)and her children and grandchildren. We talked for hours and laughed a lot. Paula had a story about everything. She loved her family and was proud of the job that she had with the Postal Service. I still remember after I first made clerk, and a customer had upset me, she came to the window and asked the customer to leave. She asked me was I ok, and then said, I realize he upset you, but has anyone else. I said no...everyone else was nice and then I used that memory anytime someone upset me. Most people are kind...and oh yes...she taught me to say..exactly the right word to people like that...and know for myself what it meant...but not get in trouble. Don't be "silly", you can get by not calling people "stupid" and even have a laugh over it later. I miss Paula, she was a good person, and a great friend, I learned a lot from her and had my the last years as a Postmaster at Winchester...just where we met.

Life is mostly froth and bubble,
Two things stand like stone.
Kindness in another's trouble,
Courage in your own.
