Thomas Dunlavey Obituary

THOMAS LEE DUNLAVEY
On June 18, 2017, Thomas Lee Dunlavey peacefully slipped the bonds of this earth to join the Lord. Tom was born in Buffalo, New York on September 12, 1943 to E. Milton Dunlavey and Mary Savanna (Colburt) Dunlavey. Olean, New York was Tom's hometown his entire childhood.
After graduating from Arch Bishop Walsh High School, Tom attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering. Tom remained in Milwaukee for the next 22 years working for the Mayor, overseeing the Model City Program.
Tom then moved to Prescott, Wisconsin, where he served as a manager for West Coast Solid Waste Management in Hastings, Minnesota for 10 years.
Tom spent the next 20 years in Evanston, Wyoming trading stocks on-line and was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. Due to failing health, Tom moved to Riverside, California in early 2016, to be close to his family. Tom was a devout Catholic and helped out in the church in different capacities throughout his life.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by brothers, Jim (Cindy) Dunlavey, and John Dunlavey; niece Deborah (Rob) Van Zanten; nephew Brian Dunlavey and great-nephews Brandon & Bailey Van Zanten.

Tom was a big help to me -- twice. I was holding a public hearing in 1974 at a Milwaukee south side library when neighbors began screaming at me. I was accused of being a newcomer from Washington DC trying to change a neighborhood in a city of which I had no knowledge. I lost my temper and yelled back that I had lived in the Milwaukee area since 1951, having been away for just four years to work for a congressman. Tom came up behind me, slid the microphone away and advised me to calm down and stay on topic. The meeting went much better. Staying calm and on topic, I managed many more successful meetings.

In 1983, starting my money management business, Tom alone prodded me into computer usage. Even built my first computer. He was an early client as was his Mother. Evidently, I taught Tom something because, as you see above, his hobby became trading stocks on line. I could never have succeeded in my business without Tom plunging me into computer usage.

Fondly remembered and sadly missed. My memories of Marquette WERE memories of Tom ("Toad").

Went to High School with Tom and have great memories of this great man! Sorry we never got together after school, but did have some phone conversations. Prayers for the family.
