Basil Beck Obituary

Beck, Basil David, - March 20, 1937-April 1, 2024. After a long battle with cancer, Basil Beck, left this world at "home" in Mauricetown, Cumberland County with his family at his bedside.

A graduate of Notre Dame University and Villanova Law School, he is survived by his four children, Basil Beck III; Gregory Beck & Stacey Beck; sister Elizabeth (Betsy Koenige) her husband Robert Koenige; and nephew Tom Forkin and his wife Cindy Forkin; his dear friend and companion Arlene Lovan; and Grandchildren Reilly & Piper. Basil is predeceased by his Father Basil Beck, Sr.; Mother Lena Beck; and Wife Carol Beck.

Basil attended Immaculate Conception Middle School in Bridgeton where he developed a love for basketball, later playing varsity basketball at Bridgeton High School. He went on to attend Notre Dame University and later Villanova University for Law School.

After graduating from Villanova Law, Basil set up his law practice in Bridgeton on East Commerce Street. In an age, in which the general practice of law was standard, Basil handled both Civil and Criminal Defense matters. He served as solicitor for multiple vicinages and was the founding President of the Cumberland County Republican Club. Many of his legal cases are still in the books as a "Matter of Law".

Basil was also a founding member of the Tortuga Golden Striders Running Club. His notoriety as being a competitive runner & marathoner are legendary, competing in the Atlantic City, New York and Boston Marathons for decades. More recently, Basil was a fixture at 5ks throughout the South Jersey Area, still running at 86 years of age.

When he wasn't running he was spending time with Family & Friends, often going to concerts. Basil saw everyone from Frank Sinatra; The Beatles; The Stones; Bruce Springsteen; David Bowie, Lynyrd Skynyrd and more. As a youth Basil played in a band on Steel Pier which opened for Tommy Dorsey. His musical tastes were as diverse as his lifestyle and his lifelong friends.

Spending his later years in Atlantic City, Basil enjoyed spending time with his dear friends, watching Villanova Basketball games, running in 5ks (at 86) and living the dream. "As cool as the other side of the pillow".

Funeral Mass shall be at the Immaculate Conception Church, 312 North Pear Street, Bridgeton, NJ April 17 at 11 a.m., a celebration of life shall follow at 12 p.m. Front Street Mauricetown Cumberland County. In lieu of flowers the family asks that consideration be made to the American Cancer Foundation.

The world just won't be the same with Basil.
A superior attorney, and knew just how to take care of his paperboy on the holidays. Happy Trails My Dear Friend.
I'll make sure I won't hit the door with the paper.

The hometown roots run very deep, and I saw this notice about Basil Beck with sadness and sympathy. Basil's mother, Lena, was my fifth grade teacher at Irving Avenue School, and much later, Basil was the attorney who handled my divorce. RIP Basil.

Basil was one of my best friends for over 30 years. He was more like the brother that I never had. He was absolutely like family. His absence will be felt forever.

As a child I got many chances too meet Mr Beck though my mother the late Carrie Mathews. The worked hard too help build change in our small town. Especially the Southside of Bridgeton that way too long was neglected by our leaders. He was a lawyer for the people without a voice. My true condolences . Dorothy Mathews Kirkland

If Basil chose you as a friend, it was for life. I was one of the lucky ones. With a heart as big as the moon, he was one of the most intelligent people I´ve ever known. Quick witted, and loved to laugh. I will treasure our fun times, and memories made through the years. Now go run through the beautiful Heavens, my dear friend.~~ Sandi Fontana

Basil was Best Man at my first wedding and the lawyer for my second divorce. We fished together, we sailed together, and we confided in each other. I´m sorry we grew apart. During this time of mourning, may his family and loved ones find solace in the many fond memories they harbor of him. I know that I will.
With deepest sympathy,
Henry Bender
