James Camey Obituary

James J. Camey

May 31, 1932 - December 5, 2024

James J. Camey, 92, of Egg Harbor Township, formerly of Northfield, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on the morning of December 5th after a brave battle with cancer. Born May 31st, 1932 in Bradford, IL, a small farming community, Jim was one of seven children born to Robert and Louise Camey. During his youth, Jim was a talented football player earning recognition in the community. After graduating from Bradford High School, Jim trained and competed in the Golden Gloves of America in Chicago earning the title of Illinois Golden Gloves Champion for the welterweight division. Following his boxing career, Jim joined the Navy and served for four years on the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier during the Korean War. While stationed in southern New Jersey, Jim attended a USO Dance where he met his wife and love of his life of 69 years, Patricia (O'Donnell) Camey. Jim and Pat put down roots in Northfield, where they raised their three children and lived for more than thirty-five years. After briefly working as a lineman for the Bell Telephone Company, Jim ventured out into the autoworks industry where he started Camey's Gulf in Somers Point located on the old traffic circle, which he successfully owned and operated for over thirty years. In addition to his career success, Jim was also an avid golfer, playing in and winning several tournaments. Jim shot his age every year from age 77 to age 91, a feat that is seldom accomplished and one which he took great pride in. Jim and Pat were active in the local golf community for much of Jim's life, only retiring his golf clubs as a result of his ongoing cancer battle. Jim was a longtime member of the Mays Landing Country Club and Greate Bay Country Club. Some of Jim's fondest years were spent on the golf course where he and his "gang" of golfers and friends shared many happy memories and good times. Golf was definitely one of Jim's greatest passions which followed him throughout many seasons of his life. Those who knew Jim became accustomed to his quick wit, which never faded, even in his later years. He was always open to share a laugh, a drink, and a story. Jim will be remembered as a loving husband, a devoted father, "Pop Pop," great grandfather, and a good friend. Jim is survived by his wife, Pat, his three children and their spouses, Kim and John Callaghan, James E. Camey and Nancy Ridgway, and Edward J. Camey and Laurie Moody; his eight grandchildren, John M. (Marissa) Callaghan, Ryan (Gemma) Callaghan, Michael (Julia) Callaghan, Sarah (Kyle) Pollock, James C. Camey, Liam Camey, Samantha Camey, and Edward T. Camey; as well as his nine great-grandchildren and one more on the way. Jim is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Jacki Day and Terri (Bill) Carew, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Louise Camey, his sisters Mary, Betty, and Pat, and his brothers Bob, David, and Mike. A visitation will be held at the George H. Wimberg Funeral Home in Linwood on Tuesday, December 10th, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a service at 11:00 AM. A private burial will follow at Seaside Cemetery. A life celebration luncheon will be held at Greate Bay Country Club starting at 1:30 PM until 4:30 PM for all friends and family who wish to attend. My memories of Uncle Jim are many and good. The biggest relate to our ongoing athletic rivalry when I was younger. Whether it was running, swimming, badminton, etc.; it was fun. In later years, that rivalry extended to my husband Mark on the golf course. They played just each other and/or with my other Camey uncles. Of course, money was involved. My mother, Patricia Camey Hamilton always looked forward to the East Coast family invasions. Rest in Peace, Uncle Jim. Continue to work on your handicap.

Jim was my favorite uncle. All his nieces and nephews adored him. He was competitive when playing volleyball at family reunions but always with the spirit of fun, and inclusive of all the kids. Loved a vodka tonic and Illinois apples. He loved his sisters and came back to his roots in Illinois every year that he could. He had a positive spirit and infectious laugh. He loved his wife and family above all. He will be missed but his memory lives in our hearts. Shelley

James A Camey

I am glad to have read of James life in the obituary. I am of the Camey's that moved from the Bradford area to Missouri in the late 1800's. Very sorry for your loss. You are in our thoughts.

I worked for Jim for many winters in the 70s. Jim was an outstanding gentleman and I was blessed to work for him. Jim and his boys became good friends, along with Jack Davis.
Rest easy Jim, have a sip of Drambuie on me.

I worked for Jim for many years at Camey´s Gulf. He was probably the most influential person in my life. Jim taught me the way to work and it helped me greatly in my career. Goodbye friend.
